Learn how to identify trees in winter! This program will give you the tools to identify many of our common trees in winter, and we hope you will find that knowing trees in the winter can be as easy as in the summer. The walk will be a great introduction to the basic terminology and show you how to use winter tree identification books and apps, using trees at Clifton Institute as examples. We will focus on native species, but may also learn a few non-natives.
Program leader, Dr. Emily Southgate, is a botanist and historical ecologist who is a Senior Scientist at Hood College. She is highly skilled at winter tree identification.
Warm and waterproof footwear is highly recommended. It will also be useful to have a hand lens, jackknife and binoculars, but these are not necessary. The resources listed below are optional.
Recommended identification books:
May Theilgaard Watts and Tom Watts: “Winter Tree Finder”
William Harlow: “Fruit Key and Twig Key to Trees and Shrubs.”
Recommended identification apps:
Flora of Virginia
Virginia Tech Tree ID
