The Slave Dwelling Project Comes to Fauquier

Join us for a 24-hour interactive public history program, organized jointly by the Clifton Institute, the Afro American Historical Association, Historic Weston, Sky Meadows, and the Piedmont Environmental Council.  Various events will be led and attended by Joseph McGill, founder of The Slave Dwelling Project, a nationally renowned nonprofit working to preserve and interpret the buildings that once housed enslaved people.

There is no charge for event attendance, thanks in part to generous support from our sponsors. Sponsors include the Law Office of Marie Washington, PLC, Piedmont Environmental Council and Airlie.

Registration is required for certain events due to capacity limitations. You can register for these events below.

Saturday, August 25

10-11AM: Talk with Joseph McGill and Dr. Kelley Deetz at the Afro American Historical Association in The Plains. Learn how the simple concept of sleeping is helping to Change the Narrative about the chattel slavery that existed throughout this nation. Doors will open at 9AM. Registration required.

11AM-5PM: Interactive public history demonstrations at three historic Fauquier sites. Feel free to come and go at each site as you please. Demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the afternoon. You will need to provide your own lunch.

The Clifton Institute in Warrenton: Open fire cooking with Dontavius Williams and hands-on archaeology with Kelley Deetz. Textile skill demonstrations on front lawn. No pets are allowed at Clifton for this program.

Mount Bleak at Sky Meadows: Hearth cooking demonstrations with Tracy Reitnauer in the log cabin and interpretation of the wash house offered. Sky Meadows has provided a limited number of parking passes for participants.

Weston Farmstead in Casanova: This is Weston’s annual open house with interpreters working in the 1871 blacksmith shop, butter making, traditional children’s games, and Joseph McGill on site at the slave dwelling from 2-3:30.

6PM: Community dinner at the Clifton Institute. Registration required.

8:30PM: Campfire conversation circle at the Clifton Institute with Joseph McGill. Registration required.

11PM: Sleepover at the Clifton Institute with Joseph McGill. Registration required.

Sunday, August 26

6AM: Sunrise service at the Clifton Institute. Memorial reading of enslaved people from each historic site. Registration required.
