On wet and warm evenings early in the spring, Ambystoma salamanders walk from their territories on the forest floor to vernal pools to mate. On the right night, it can be quite a spectacle to see the salamanders gathering. The Clifton Institute has healthy populations of both Spotted Salamanders and Jefferson Salamanders and we expect them to start mating in mid-late February. Join us for an evening walk to go look for these interesting animals, as well as the other amphibians that breed in our vernal pools. We expect to go out sometime around February 20, but we will keep our eye on the weather and pick an evening that looks right for the ideal conditions.
