In 2022 we started a research project to study what habitats Box Turtles use at different times of year so that we and other landowners can know what the best time of year is to mow fields and do other land management practices that might disrupt or even kill Box Turtles. In the third installment of this event, participants will be searching for new turtles to notch, as well as relocating some individuals with prior notches. We will also be radiotracking a few individuals to check in on their habitat use, and behaviors. Those who want to will have the opportunity to radio track some turtles and assist with measuring new turtles. This is a special opportunity to tag along with our staff researchers and see how field science is done.
This event will be led by our former Box turtle technician and now Smithsonian Conservation and Biology Institute intern, Mark Ketner. Mark is continuing his work on this project under the guidance of researchers at SCBI.
