CANCELLED Beavers: Ecosystem Engineers Homeschool Program
Wednesday, Mar 18, 2020
9:30am – 12:00pm
During this class, students ages 6-12 will learn all about North America’s largest rodent. Beavers are ecosystem engineers and keystone species whose ponds and wetlands provide habitat for countless other plants and animals. How and why do they build such impressive structures, and what can we learn from them about human resource use? Students will be led on a hike around our ponds to observe three beaver lodges and a dam. If we’re lucky, we’ll catch sight of one swimming in the pond or hear their vocalizations from within the lodge! Then students will work in small groups to design and construct a beaver dam of their own. Drop-off and pick-up will occur at the peach-colored farmhouse. Students should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes (rubber boots if you have them).
Cost: $10 per student
