DESCRIPTION:Members from the Conservation Ecology Center at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute will be joining the Clifton Institute for an evening discussion of amphibian conservation and ecology! Jessica Meck, Hunter VanDoren, and Michaela Mincone will give a presentation highlighting the importance and incredible characteristics of Virginia’s native amphibian species. After the presentation, they will lead an evening walk to nearby vernal pools to identify salamanders, frogs, and egg masses.

Jessica, Hunter, and Michaela currently research the ecology of Wood and Spotted Turtles throughout the Commonwealth as part of a regional effort from Maine to Florida to understand the species’ distribution and abundance. Jessica obtained her Master’s degree in Conservation Biology at Antioch University New England and has researched various turtle species in Massachusetts, Florida, and Virginia. Hunter, a Virginia native, obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science at Liberty University and has been a life-long naturalist focusing on reptiles and amphibians. Michaela obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Behavior at Bucknell University and has studied primarily disease ecology prior to coming to the Smithsonian.

Materials to Bring: rain boots, amphibian field guides (if you have your own), rain Jacket, headlamp/flashlight
