DESCRIPTION:This event will include a talk by Dr. Steve Roble consisting of basic information about moths, and then a summary of his agency\'s efforts during the past 30 years to document the composition, distribution and conservation status of the Virginia (macro) moth fauna. Then we will go outside where several ultraviolet lights will be illuminating white bed sheets to attract moths and other nocturnal insects and observe, attempt to identify, and discuss some of them.

Presenter Dr. Steve Roble is the staff (head) Zoologist for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Division of Natural Heritage where his duties include the identification, documentation, and conservation of the habitats of rare species of animals, including both vertebrates and invertebrates, throughout Virginia. Prior to that, he worked as the Wetlands Wildlife Biologist for the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program in Boston where he became interested in dragonflies, one of his favorite animal groups. He is the editor of Banisteria, the semiannual journal of the Virginia Natural History Society, and a research associate at the Virginia Museum of Natural History.
