SUMMARY:Bobolink Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. Directions will be provided to registered participants. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) DESCRIPTION:Nature journaling is a powerful tool for learning about plants and animals\, a mindful practice for connecting to nature\, and just a great way to spend time outside. You can always nature journal by yourself\, but it can be really fun to go out with other people to get inspired together and see other ways of capturing the same phenomenon on paper. Join us for our first ever nature journaling field trip! In April Co-Director and passionate nature journaler Eleanor Harris will be nature journaling at Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve. We’ll meet at the trailhead\, journal for a couple of hours\, and then com back together to share what we discovered. Eleanor will stick around for a picnic lunch after journaling. More details about where to park and how to meetup will be emailed to registrants closer to the date. Please note that this event is not at the Clifton Institute! DESCRIPTION:**Virtual event** \nRegister here: https://www.ndal.org/upcoming-events/fire \nCo-Director Bert Harris will present the Clifton Institute’s recent research on remnant Piedmont grasslands as part of the New Directions in the American Landscape’s Spring Virtual Series! \nHe’ll discuss how Clifton is using these results to set goals for meadow plantings and grassland restoration projects including the 50 acres that are burned annually at the Institute. He’ll then talk about the Institute’s 100-acre grassland restoration experiment that is testing eight different methods (e.g. fire\, mowing\, tilling\, planting\, herbicide) to convert non-native fields to native meadows. He’ll finish by covering how even the timing of prescribed fire can affect the resulting plant communities and pollinator habitat. \nFritz Reuter\, a conservation-based landscape designer and land planner\, and founder of Virginica LL\, will discuss how  he incorporates fire into small landscape design and practices. He’ll demonstrate how his “burn on the run” techniques have resulted in the type of vegetative vigor that only a practice done for thousands of years – before centuries-long wholesale suppression – could re-offer. SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. DESCRIPTION:Over 9 sessions beginning in September and running through May\, the members of Nature Club will work together to create a map of an uncharted piece of the Clifton Institute and build a trail that runs through it. The project will culminate in an unveiling party for the new trail led by the students themselves.  This is a chance for interested\, motivated naturalists to discover corners of the property that not even the staff have seen!  We will focus on new skills each month including cartography\, compass-work\, and plant ID.  By working in the same patch of woods each session and watching it change with the onset of spring\, students will have the opportunity to feel deep connection to a piece of land. DESCRIPTION:Every year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 27th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 20th year contributing our data to NABA. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. \nParticipants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  Unless your leader says otherwise\, participants will meet at the Clifton Institute at 9:00 AM. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. SUMMARY:Common Plant Family Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you’re learning to identify plants\, learning the common families can really help narrow down your options when you’re faced with an unfamiliar specimen. If you already know a few plants\, learning their families can provide a useful framework to help organize all the species rattling around in your brain. Whatever level you’re at\, learning to identify the plant families around us is a really fun way to get to know the natural world. In this program\, Managing Director Eleanor Harris will give a brief talk on the ways to identify the most common plant families in Virginia. Then she will lead a short walk in our fields to practice our plant family identification skills. We know it’s a slightly awkward time of day; if you’d like to bring dinner and eat during the talk you are welcome to. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: This program is intended for an adult audience. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend. \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will include an indoor presentation. We are requiring all participants to be fully vaccinated. We will ask to see vaccination cards. At the moment\, we are not planning on requiring masks inside; however\, we will monitor the situation and update participants if that changes before June 16. SUMMARY:Patterns in Nature Classes and Crafts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this exciting series of programs all about patterns in nature! Mathematical patterns are all around us\, in plants\, animals\, and even fungi! Knowing where to find them and why they’re there can make being outside in nature even more fun. On each of three consecutive Thursdays\, co-director Eleanor Harris\, Ph.D.\, will give a brief talk on one pattern in nature and then we’ll gather around the dining room table and make a craft that displays that evening’s pattern. No mathematical knowledge or crafting experience required\, just a little curiosity and creativity! All materials will be provided. We’ll have drinks and snacks as we craft. We will meet on February 17\, February 24\, and March 3 6-7PM. \n\nCost: $30 ($25 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: Adults only. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will take place inside. SUMMARY:Family Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Families with children in grades K-8 are invited to come along as we explore the field station and experience autumn in Virginia. We’ll explore the woods to look for changes in the landscape and migrating birds. This program is a wonderful opportunity for families to explore nature together. We pick a different trail to explore each month and usually move slowly as we stop often to look at and learn about the plants and animals that live in Northern Virginia. \n\n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge:  Families with children in grades K-8 \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside port-o-potty will be available). We require that everyone have a mask with them in case we need to go inside during inclement weather\, to administer first aid\, or for other reasons. SUMMARY:Octobird Fest: Winter Bird Identification
DESCRIPTION:Every October we offer a series of programs all about birds: Octobird Fest! Whether you come to one program or all three\, you’ll learn a lot about the amazing birds that call Virginia home. The first program in the series is a winter bird identification workshop on Zoom. \nEvery season brings its own challenges for birdwatching. In winter similar-looking sparrows can be hard to tell apart and birding by ear becomes more difficult as birds start singing less and calling more. Join the leaders of our bimonthly bird walks\, including Executive Director Bert Harris\, to learn some tips for identifying winter birds. Managing Director Eleanor Harris will quiz them with tricky calls and pictures and you can play along as they talk through the identification process!
