SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Christmas Bird Count! We’ll spend the day surveying the birds in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats. We usually see a nice diversity of waterfowl and grassland birds. There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow! Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia\, contribute to a long-term community science project\, and get to know other birdwatchers in the area. After you register\, our staff will assign you to a team of volunteers led by an expert counter. (If you feel qualified to lead a team\, please let us know!) \nBeginners will be assigned to a team responsible for counting the Clifton Institute’s property; this will give you a chance to go slow and learn how to identify our winter birds. If you are an experienced birdwatcher we will likely assign you to a team that will drive from site to site in our circle. Each team will decided whether to carpool or caravan from site to site. Unless conditions change dramatically\, we plan to have a compilation dinner here at the Clifton Institute at the end of the day. \nSince we will be inside\, we ask that you be vaccinated and bring your vaccine card. If you are not vaccinated\, or are just tired at the end of a long day\, you can leave your data with us\, grab a treat\, and go. Chili will be warm starting at 5:00 p.m. \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.\n \nBring: Please bring binoculars if available.\n \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall).\n \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. We look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Beginner Lichen Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Lichens: part algae\, part fungi\, all mystery! Did you know that we have more than 400 species of lichens in our region and that many of them can be identified with a little practice and a hand lens? Lichens in our area are diverse in their appearance\, in where they grow\, and in how they reproduce. The northern Piedmont is a great place to learn lichens because we have a fascinating blend of mountain and coastal plain species. The 900-acre Clifton Institute hosts at least 75 species\, including some mature forest specialists like the Shaggy Fringe Lichen. \nIn this program\, lichenologist and mycology teacher at George Mason University Dr. Natalie Howe will teach us the basics of lichen biology and then lead us on a walk around the field station to see how many species we can find. No experience with lichens is necessary. \nCost: $10 ($8 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the day before the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 required. This program will include a brief indoor component (a short presentation on lichen anatomy and biology) where masks will be required. By attending\, you are affirming that you are not experiencing nor have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n

SUMMARY:Beginner Grass Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At first glance\, it might seem like grasses all look the same and that they don’t offer the same beauty that showy flowers do. But we think it’s worth taking the time to learn to tell grasses apart and to appreciate their unique beauty. And winter is a great time to do it because the grasses have gone to seed and are easy to see in an otherwise quiescent landscape. In this workshop for beginners\, Executive Director Bert Harris will take participants on a walk through some of our fields and teach participants how to identify common grasses. \nCost: $10 ($8 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Meetup and Walk
DESCRIPTION:From Co-Director Eleanor Harris: Nature journaling is my favorite hobby\, a great way to spend time outside\, and a powerful tool for learning about nature. I want to help develop the community of nature journalers in our area and to encourage more people to start their own nature journals. Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! I’ll give a very brief introduction to nature journaling before we go for a walk on our beautiful 900-acre property. On the walk we’ll stop and journal about whatever we find. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. Adults will be responsible for monitoring their children\, but we would love to have all ages of nature lovers attend. \n\n\nBring: Please bring a journal and art supplies. Just a pencil is fine! \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:Winter Sparrow Workshop
DESCRIPTION:** This event will be held over Zoom **\nGet ready for winter by brushing up on sparrow identification! \nEvery season brings its own challenges for birdwatching. In winter\, similar-looking sparrows can be hard to tell apart and birding by ear becomes more difficult as birds sing less and call more. Join expert birder Nick Newberry and Executive Director Bert Harris to learn some tips for identifying winter sparrows. Nick and Bert will walk you through the field marks of each species and use their years of birding experience to help you learn how to identify sparrows.  Then in the second section of the program Nick and Bert will show sparrow photos to help you practice and test your new skills. This program is intended for beginning and intermediate birders. We will send a Zoom link closer to the date. \nCost:  $10 ($8 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: All ages. \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. \n\n\nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. We hope to see you there! \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Raptor Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Every fall raptors migrate south along the Appalachian Mountains. Several species of hawks\, eagles\, and falcons can be seen migrating\, but the biggest spectacles are the days when huge numbers of Broad-winged Hawks fly by. If we’re lucky we might see thousands! One of the expert bird-watchers on our staff will lead the group and discuss how to identify raptors in flight. We will meet at Snickers Gap\, where there’s an excellent view of migrating raptors. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: This program is intended for an adult audience. Interested children accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend. \n\n\nBring: Please bring binoculars. It can be very cold and windy in the gap\, so we also recommend dressing for those conditions and bringing a hot drink in a thermos. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. \n\n\nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \n\n\nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \n\n
