SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Camp
DESCRIPTION:Home for spring break? Come to our first ever day-long spring break camp\, all about vernal pools! \nCampers will spend a day with Clifton Institute staff studying the animals that live in our vernal pools! Vernal pools are small bodies of water which dry out for part of the year\, making them the perfect amphibian nurseries. They are home to frog\, salamander\, and dragonfly young\, as well as a wriggling mass of other creatures! \nWe will spend the first part of the day learning about amphibian and insect life cycles\, as well as how to identify many of our local amphibian species by sight and sound. We’ll spend the rest of the day hiking to the pools with our rain boots and research equipment and learning how to safely handle amphibians\, check water quality\, and interpret our findings. \nCampers will have the chance to participate in real science\, practice nature journaling\, as well as use their creativity to design their own amphibian paradise. \nCampers will need: \n-Picnic lunch \n-2 snacks \n-Rubber boots \n-Backpack \n-Water bottle \nThis is a drop-off program and a signed waiver will be required for participation. If the cost is prohibitive or you are missing something from the needs list\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org). More details about the day will be sent 2 weeks prior to the program. \nPrice: $50 ($40 for Friends of Clifton) per child \nAge: Students in grade 1-6. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). At the moment\, we are requiring that everyone have a mask with them in case we need to go inside during inclement weather\, to administer first aid\, or for other reasons. Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.) \nRegistration is REQUIRED. Please note that our registration system may only give you the space for one attendee. If you are registering for multiple children\, please put all of their first names in the First Name box. Thank you! \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy.

SUMMARY:Warbler Song Bootcamp
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION CLOSED \n*This is a virtual event* \nBrush up on your warbler songs just before the migrants arrive in droves. We will listen to the songs of each of the migratory warblers that pass through our region in spring\, while looking at spectrograms to help visual learners identify differences in similar songs. We will also briefly discuss habitats where breeding warblers can be found in our area and cover a handful of other migrants such as vireos and thrushes. This workshop will be of interest to birdwatchers of all skill levels. It will definitely be more fun than listening to a warbler song CD in your car! This event will take place over Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to participants shortly before the event. \nCost: $10 ($5 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: All ages. \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Kestrel Watch
DESCRIPTION:In what we hope will become a regular occurrence\, we are inviting the public to participate in one of our ongoing research projects. This time you’ll help us track American Kestrels that have been outfitted with GPS transmitters\, collect vegetation data in different types of fields\, and visit ink-pad tracks to see what kinds of rodents have been visiting. This is a great opportunity to see what it’s like to do field research and to learn about some fascinating native species. We will start here at the Clifton Institute and then drive to a few nearby properties where we know kestrels are hanging out. From Clifton\, we will encourage but not require everyone to carpool in as few cars as possible. We’re looking forward to a beautiful day in the field with you! \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults only. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water bottle. Binoculars are recommended. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Box Turtles
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a research project to study what habitats Box Turtles use at different times of year so that we and other landowners can know what the best time of year is to mow fields and do other land management practices that might disrupt or even kill Box Turtles. On this second installment of Science Saturdays\, participants will help us get our 2023 season started by looking for turtles we radio-tagged last year and potentially finding new turtles to tag. This is a special opportunity to tag along with our staff researchers and see how field science is done. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults only. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:*Cancelled* Spring Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been cancelled due to winter die-off causing a low plant stock. Check back in the fall for our fall plant sale!** \n  \nNative plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Plant Family Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you’re learning to identify plants\, learning the common families can really help narrow down your options when you’re faced with an unfamiliar specimen. If you already know a few plants\, learning their families can provide a useful framework to help organize all the species rattling around in your brain. Whatever level you’re at\, learning to identify the plant families around us is a really fun way to get to know the natural world. In this program\, Managing Director Eleanor Harris will give a brief talk on the ways to identify the most common plant families in Virginia. Then she will lead a short walk in our fields to practice our plant family identification skills! \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: This program is intended for an adult audience. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend. \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will include an indoor presentation. SUMMARY:Bobolink Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. Cover photo by Kathlin Simpkins. \nLocation: The event will take place on a private property near Upperville in northern Fauquier County. Directions will be provided to registered participants. \nCost: Free \nAges: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWhat to bring: We recommend wearing long pants and boots to protect yourself from ticks and a broad-brimmed hat. We also recommend bringing binoculars and a camera. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for an update on the afternoon before. \nCOVID-19 information: This event will be entirely outdoors.

SUMMARY:Young Scientists Research Experience (June 19 - 23)
DESCRIPTION:During this unique experience\, students will explore and carry out their own research project. Young Scientists will engage in inquiry-based\, hands-on learning as they develop their own research questions\, collect and analyze data\, and present their results\, all under the guidance of an experienced mentor. This opportunity is perfect for middle and high school students with an interest in the environmental and natural sciences and the desire to experience ecological fieldwork. We welcome motivated students who are excited to spend the week at our beautiful\, 900-acre field station in the northern Virginia Piedmont in the company of like-minded peers. \nExample research questions include: \n\nHow does road noise affect the singing of birds\, frogs\, and other animals?\nWhere on the field station is there the most evidence of deer and other mammals?\nAre there more insects on plants that are native to Virginia or on exotic plants?\n\nAges: 13-18 at the time of camp. \nTime: 9AM – 4PM\, Monday – Friday* \n*There will be a presentation of student research projects on Friday evening\, open to friends and families. \nCost: $350.00.  Please note that the ticket will appear as “Free” until registration opens. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to 30 days before the start of camp will receive a refund\, minus a $50 nonrefundable registration fee.  Cancellations within 30 days of camp start date forfeit full tuition. \nPaperwork:  Within 1 week of registration\, you will be emailed liability\, medical\, and emergency contact forms to be filled out and returned by May 31st\, 2023.  If you do not submit your paperwork by this date\, you will be refunded all but the $50 and the spot will be offered to the next person on the wait list.  Paperwork is important for us to plan!  Please send it to camps@cliftoninstitute.org upon completion! \nVaccination Policy:  All staff and campers aged 5 and above must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19\, in addition to being up-to-date with all Virginia Board of Health School Immunization requirements for the appropriate age (found here).  Masks will be provided and required to be worn by all staff and campers should we need to be indoors during inclement weather or while administering first aid.   \nScholarships:  If you are interested in a scholarship\, please email camps@cliftoninstitute.org before registering so that we can send you a scholarship application.  We don’t want financial limitations to get in the way of your child attending camp!

SUMMARY:Third Annual Dragonfly Count
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED BUT ADDITIONAL PEOPLE ARE STILL WELCOME. PLEASE EMAIL BERT AT BHARRIS@CLIFTONINSTITUTE.ORG IF YOU’D LIKE TO ATTEND. \nJoin us for our third annual Dragonfly Count! Our goals are to learn which species of dragonflies and damselflies are found in our area\, to monitor changes in their populations\, and to encourage everyone to learn more about Odonates. The map of the count circle is here. The circle includes a wide variety of aquatic habitats\, including a sphagnum bog\, fish-free marshes\, lakes with abundant lily pads\, and a variety of clean streams and rivers that range from tiny seeps all the way up to the Rappahannock River. This interesting area has not received as much study as nearby northern Virginia\, but 72 species of dragonflies and damselflies have already been documented inside the circle. In 2022\, we found 55 species of dragonflies and damselflies\, including Laura’s and Rapids Clubtails\, Sphagnum Sprite\, Appalachian Jewelwing\, Amber-winged Spreading\, Lilypad Forktail\, and Turquoise Bluet. Who knows what else we’ll find this year! We will divide the circle up into several areas\, which teams of people will cover\, similar to a Christmas Bird Count or NABA butterfly count. We will let you know where to meet closer to the date. The count is open to people of all experience levels. We welcome dragonfly experts as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these fascinating insects. \nThis event is free but registration is required. Email Bert Harris (bharris@cliftoninstitute.org) with any questions or if you would like to lead one of the teams. Please let us know if you live inside the count circle and you have a fish-free pond or marsh or a pond with lily pads or other emergent aquatic vegetation on your property that you would like to be included in the count. We are partnering with the Fauquier County Parks and Recreation Department\, Goose Creek Association\, Virginia Outdoors Foundation\, and White House Farm Foundation on this event. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: It will be hot and we’ll be spending time near or in the water. Shorts and sturdy sandals or rubber boots are usually best\, but long pants can come in handy as well. Please bring sunscreen\, sun hat\, binoculars (ESSENTIAL)\, camera\, insect net\, and plenty of water. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!
