SUMMARY:Spotted Salamander Walk
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, salamanders leave their homes in the woods and head toward vernal pools\, temporary ponds created by spring rains and melting winter snow. The conditions must be just right\, a warm night with rainy conditions. The males arrive first and lay sperm sacks around the pond. The females come later and absorb these sacks\, which causes them to lay their eggs\, about 50-100 per female. Join us on a walk to our vernal pools to witness this spectacle of nature. \nWe’ll be watching the weather closely to adjust our time and date that looks most promising for us to see this wonderful migration. SUMMARY:Geology of the Piedmont Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come dig a little deeper into Fauquier County (and beyond) in our 2nd annual Geology Tour guided by our Habitat Specialist Andrew Eberly! Hitch a ride on the edge of the North American plate as it sails across the globe and watch neighboring continents come crashing in then break free again as mountains and oceans rise and fall. Visit rocks over a billion years old\, born when the continents were plantless deserts. Hear stories of buried volcanoes and look for clues written in everyday rocks about landscapes of the long distant past. The forests of Northern Virginia are hiding a rich and varied display of geologic forces. This is an opportunity to practice a new way of reading the landscape and glimpse what lies beneath the trees and soil. For those who attended last year\, we will be visiting new sites this year. We will also be travelling by individual cars (with the opportunity to carpool) instead of by van. SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Camp
DESCRIPTION:Home for spring break? Come to our first ever day-long spring break camp\, all about vernal pools! \nCampers will spend a day with Clifton Institute staff studying the animals that live in our vernal pools! Vernal pools are small bodies of water which dry out for part of the year\, making them the perfect amphibian nurseries. They are home to frog\, salamander\, and dragonfly young\, as well as a wriggling mass of other creatures! \nWe will spend the first part of the day learning about amphibian and insect life cycles\, as well as how to identify many of our local amphibian species by sight and sound. We’ll spend the rest of the day hiking to the pools with our rain boots and research equipment and learning how to safely handle amphibians\, check water quality\, and interpret our findings. \nCampers will have the chance to participate in real science\, practice nature journaling\, as well as use their creativity to design their own amphibian paradise. \nCampers will need: \n-Picnic lunch \n-2 snacks \n-Rubber boots \n-Backpack \n-Water bottle \nThis is a drop-off program and a signed waiver will be required for participation. If the cost is prohibitive or you are missing something from the needs list\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org). DESCRIPTION:On this program Executive Director and amateur lichenologist Bert Harris will give a guided tour of some of his favorite lichen-y spots while explaining the basics of lichen biology and how to identify common species. SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Kestrel Watch
DESCRIPTION:In what we hope will become a regular occurrence\, we are inviting the public to participate in one of our ongoing research projects. This time you’ll help us track American Kestrels that have been outfitted with GPS transmitters\, collect vegetation data in different types of fields\, and visit ink-pad tracks to see what kinds of rodents have been visiting. This is a great opportunity to see what it’s like to do field research and to learn about some fascinating native species. We will start here at the Clifton Institute and then drive to a few nearby properties where we know kestrels are hanging out. From Clifton\, we will encourage but not require everyone to carpool in as few cars as possible. DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a research project to study what habitats Box Turtles use at different times of year so that we and other landowners can know what the best time of year is to mow fields and do other land management practices that might disrupt or even kill Box Turtles. On this second installment of Science Saturdays\, participants will help us get our 2023 season started by looking for turtles we radio-tagged last year and potentially finding new turtles to tag. SUMMARY:*Cancelled* Spring Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been cancelled due to winter die-off causing a low plant stock. Check back in the fall for our fall plant sale!** \n  \nNative plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute.
