DESCRIPTION:*The actual day of the walk is entirely dependent on the weather and will likely not be on Feb 10th! We use that as a placeholder date. We’ll be watching the weather closely to adjust our time and date that looks most promising for us to see this wonderful migration (above freezing and rainy). We will contact registered attendees when the weather looks good for a migration night .* \nOnce a year\, salamanders leave their homes in the woods and head toward vernal pools\, temporary ponds created by spring rains and melting winter snow. The conditions must be just right\, a warm night with rainy conditions. The males arrive first and lay sperm sacks around the pond. The females come later and absorb these sacks\, which causes them to lay their eggs\, about 50-100 per female. Join us on a walk to our vernal pools to witness this spectacle of nature. \nCost: FREE \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nPlease bring: A flashlight and waterproof boots. DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Polliwogs is a monthly program for pre-K children that includes a lesson on a different topic every month\, story time and short nature walk. Students get to know each other\, grow their independence\, and gain confidence in the outdoors with our skilled instructors. \nThe 9-month series will take place on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 on the following dates: September 11\, October 9\, November 13\, December 11\, January 8\, February 12\, March 12\, April 9\, May 14. \nWe understand that you may have children outside the 2-5-year-old range that need to come along with you to Polliwogs. You are welcome to keep them with you or for them to entertain themselves during the class. It is also fine with us if slightly older children participate. \nWhen you register below\, please register and pay for the number of children you expect to participate in the class each month! You can think about this through the lens of: will my child want to use the materials that they see the other kids using (magnifying lenses\, eye droppers\, stuffies)? \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering. Box Turtles are thought to have declined by as much as 75% in the Mid Atlantic and mortality from mowing is likely to be an important factor in rural areas. Bert will cover our efforts to survey and track Box Turtles in northern Virginia. DESCRIPTION:Winter is a great time of year to learn how to identify trees and to practice looking at bark and twigs. We will start this program with a brief presentation indoors about the tips and tricks to identify the most common trees in our forests. Then we will take you on a mile-long walk in the woods to practice. This program is meant for beginners. Advanced botanists are welcome but you may teach us more than we teach you! DESCRIPTION:Nature Club is a program where middle and high school students who are interested in the natural world can spend time in a nerd-friendly environment. If they like bones\, insects\, tools\, plants\, fungi\, research\, or simply to be outdoors\, then they have found their people. \nThe club generally meets on the second Saturday of every month throughout the school year. In the 2025-26 year\, we will be focusing on the three tenets of our work at Clifton: Research\, Restoration\, and Education. Members will help various Clifton staff and visiting professionals from other local organizations with what they do around the field station: propagating plants\, building structures\, removing invasive species\, studying plants and animals\, and making educational materials. There will be a chance for students to share their experience with their families at the final party in May! \nNature Club meets from 1-3:30 PM on the following dates: September 13\, October 4*\, November 8\, December 13\, January 10\, February 14\, March 14\, April 18*\, May 9. \nScholarship Opportunity: We have 5 full merit-based scholarships available. DESCRIPTION:***THIS IS A VIRTUAL EVENT*** \nThe Clifton Institute provides around 40 field trips per year to over 1\,200 pre-K-12th students from Fauquier County and beyond. During the field trips\, students learn about the natural history of the Northern Virginia piedmont and participate in some of our ongoing research projects\, such as our Native Grassland Restoration or Vernal Pool Monitoring! \nWe rely on an excellent team of volunteers to help run large field trips (sometimes 90 students at a time) alongside Clifton’s small education staff. This virtual program will be an introduction to Clifton’s educational mission\, an overview of what field trips look like\, and an opportunity for curious folks to hear about the volunteer positions available and ask questions. \nIf\, after the online session you feel like you’d be willing to help with our field trip program\, you can attend the in-person training on Wednesday\, February 18th. All volunteers hoping to help with the education programs must attend the in-person training. As you walk our trails\, you can help us take care of the field station by keeping your eyes and ears open to help us learn about the ecosystem we’re a part of and by enjoying and respecting the plants and animals that live here. \n\nA trail map is available here. Please note that some trails are in the process of being built and many are not marked. Navigation skills and a GPS are recommended. Please stay on the trails\, use common sense\, and proceed at your own risk. \nThe farmhouse is closed to all visitors at this time. There are port-a-potties available in both parking lots. \nWe reserve the right to deny access to our property to anyone who does not obey the rules posted below or is otherwise disruptive to our field station operations. \n\nOn open-access days\, you may park either at the lower parking area (“the Gap”) or at the farm house.\nAll children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.\nYou are welcome to bring your family with you on open-access days. SUMMARY:Woodcock Watch
DESCRIPTION:The American Woodcock is one of our stealthiest birds\, but it’s also one of the most fun to watch when they do show themselves. On early spring evenings\, the males perform their mating displays\, flying high into the air and falling back to the ground\, making calls and sounds with their wings as they do so. \nDuring this program we will give a brief introduction to these interesting birds and then we’ll go out into our fields where we will be able to watch and hear the birds perform. We’ll be watching the weather to pick a date that looks most promising for us to see a good show (if the weather is too cloudy\, windy\, or cold they stay hunkered down). \nIf March 6 looks good we will hold the event then. Otherwise we expect to pick one of March 14 or 15 at the same time. We will email you a few days beforehand when we know more. 
 Please bring a flashlight. We will be standing out in the field for around 30 minutes. We will have sit pads to lend out. Some people like to bring a small camping stool\, chair\, or blanket\, but keep in mind that we will have to walk about a quarter mile and we may relocate depending on where the birds are. \nCost:  \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.)  All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. SUMMARY:**RESCHEDULED** Geology of the Piedmont Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we look for signs of a rift valley that once cut a wide chasm across the Jurassic deserts of Northern Virginia. We will see evidence of saline lakes and rivers that carried water (and sand/mud) from the towering Appalachians when they were a young mountain range. We will also get to cross the remnants of huge lava flows that periodically swept across the valley. We will begin by descending the once rugged mountains lining the western edge of the basin (now the rolling hills around Warrenton)\, crossing the rift heading southeast\, and then emerging onto much older metamorphic rocks near Kelly’s Ford. \nThis year we will be following roughly the same route that we took in 2023 across the Culpeper Basin. This Mesozoic basin is one of the more prominent and ecologically important features on the Piedmont. It is also where some of the youngest rocks of the entire Piedmont occur\, marking the last major tectonic event along the eastern seaboard when the Atlantic Ocean was born. Because of this\, the rocks are minimally deformed and represent a bit of a break from the mind-bending complexity of the older rocks dominating the rest of the region. \nWe will meet at Clifton at 9:00am where we will check out some of our greenstone outcrops then head out toward C.F. Phelps WMA near Remington\, making several stops along the way. We will eat lunch along the way (please provide your own lunch) and wrap up around 4:00pm. \nCost:  \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $30 ($25 for Friends of Clifton.) SUMMARY:Piedmont Polliwogs 2025-26
DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Polliwogs is a monthly program for pre-K children that includes a lesson on a different topic every month\, story time and short nature walk. Students get to know each other\, grow their independence\, and gain confidence in the outdoors with our skilled instructors. \nThe 9-month series will take place on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 on the following dates: September 11\, October 9\, November 13\, December 11\, January 8\, February 12\, March 12\, April 9\, May 14. \nWe understand that you may have children outside the 2-5-year-old range that need to come along with you to Polliwogs. You are welcome to keep them with you or for them to entertain themselves during the class. It is also fine with us if slightly older children participate. \nWhen you register below\, please register and pay for the number of children you expect to participate in the class each month! You can think about this through the lens of: will my child want to use the materials that they see the other kids using (magnifying lenses\, eye droppers\, stuffies)? \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering. The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $90 per child ($75 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Children ages 2-5\, accompanied by a caregiver \nBring: Please bring a snack and drink. SUMMARY:Nature Club 2025-26
DESCRIPTION:Nature Club is a program where middle and high school students who are interested in the natural world can spend time in a nerd-friendly environment. If they like bones\, insects\, tools\, plants\, fungi\, research\, or simply to be outdoors\, then they have found their people. \nThe club generally meets on the second Saturday of every month throughout the school year. In the 2025-26 year\, we will be focusing on the three tenets of our work at Clifton: Research\, Restoration\, and Education. Members will help various Clifton staff and visiting professionals from other local organizations with what they do around the field station: propagating plants\, building structures\, removing invasive species\, studying plants and animals\, and making educational materials. There will be a chance for students to share their experience with their families at the final party in May! \nNature Club meets from 1-3:30 PM on the following dates: September 13\, October 4*\, November 8\, December 13\, January 10\, February 14\, March 14\, April 18*\, May 9. \nScholarship Opportunity: We have 5 full merit-based scholarships available. To apply\, please fill out our Scholarship Application Google Form by September 5th\, 2025. Wait to register until you have heard back from Bridget (she will register you so you will not have to pay the program fee). If you have any questions\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org) \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering. The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $100 per student ($75 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Youth grades 7-12; this program is drop off only. \nBring: Please bring a water bottle and snack. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snowfall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this series\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. We use our trails to teach kids about the environment and their experiences are much richer if there are still feathers and bones and everything else for them to look at.\nNo swimming\, fishing\, boating\, or any other entry in the ponds.\nNo alcohol is permitted.\nNo horses\, bicycles\, automobiles\, ATVs\, or any other vehicles are allowed on the trails.\nNo hunting is permitted.
