SUMMARY:Nature Club : 2023-24
DESCRIPTION:Nature Club is a program where middle and high school students who are interested in the natural world can spend time in a nerd-friendly environment.  If they like bones\, insects\, tools\, plants\, fungi\, research\, or simply to be outdoors\, then they have found their people!  The club meets on the first Saturday of every month throughout the school year.  In the 2023-24 year\, we will be focusing on the three tenants of our work at Clifton: Research\, Restoration\, and Education.  Members will conduct research in our grassland in the fall and our vernal pools in late winter spring.  They will assist in the collection of seeds and propagation of native plants to later be transplanted.  Lastly\, they will help create programming for younger students and work on a science communication subject of their own choosing and design.  There will be a chance for students to share their work with the families at the final gathering in May!  Nature Club meets from 1-4PM on the following dates: \nSeptember 2 \nOctober 7 \nNovember 4 \nDecember 2 \nJanuary 6 \nFebruary 3 \nMarch 2 \nApril 6 \nMay 4 \nScholarship Opportunity:  We have 5 full merit-based scholarships available.  To apply\, please fill out our Scholarship Application Google Form by August 29th\, 2023.  If you have any questions\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org). \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering.  The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $125 per student ($100 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Youth grades 7-12; this program is drop off only. \nBring: Please bring a water bottle and snack. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this series\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. You can become a Friend of Clifton with a minimum annual donation of $40. Your support will help us reach our goals of expanding and improving our education\, restoration\, and research programs this year. Thank you!\n\nBefore attending an open-access day\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here). As you walk our trails\, you can help us take care of the field station by keeping your eyes and ears open to help us learn about the ecosystem we’re a part of and by enjoying and respecting the plants and animals that live here.\n\n\n\nA trail map is available here. Please note that some trails are in the process of being built and many are not marked. Navigation skills and a GPS are recommended. Please stay on the trails\, use common sense\, and proceed at your own risk. \nThe farmhouse is closed to all visitors at this time. There are port-a-potties available in both parking lots. \nWe reserve the right to deny access to our property to anyone who does not obey the rules posted below or is otherwise disruptive to our field station operations. \n\nOn open-access days\, you may park either at the lower parking area (“the Gap”) or at the farm house.\nAll children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.\nYou are welcome to bring your family with you on open-access days. One or two visitors are acceptable as well\, but if this starts to be abused we reserve the right to limit the benefit to family members.\nNo dogs are permitted.\nLeave no trace. We expect you to take all litter with you. It would be even better if you helped us pick up any litter you find! We do not have trash collection facilities.\nTake nothing but photographs. We use our trails to teach kids about the environment and their experiences are much richer if there are still feathers and bones and everything else for them to look at.\nNo swimming\, fishing\, boating\, or any other entry in the ponds.\nNo alcohol is permitted.\nNo horses\, bicycles\, automobiles\, ATVs\, or any other vehicles are allowed on the trails.\nNo hunting is permitted.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We are in our third full year of offering Nature School!  Students meet every other Wednesday from September through May to learn about different natural history subjects through hands-on research\, restoration\, and exploration. DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Polliwogs is a monthly program for pre-K children that includes a lesson on a different topic every month\, story time and short nature walk.  Students get to know each other\, grow their independence\, and gain confidence in the outdoors with our skilled instructors.  The 9-month series will take place on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 on the following dates: \nSeptember 14 \nOctober 12 \nNovember 9 \nDecember 14 \nJanuary 11 \nFebruary 8 \nMarch 14 \nApril 11 \nMay 9 \nWe understand that you may have children outside the 2-5-year-old range that need to come along with you to Polliwogs. You are welcome to keep them with you or for them to entertain themselves during the class. It is also fine with us if slightly older children participate. DESCRIPTION:Sedges are one of the most diverse and ecologically important plant groups in Virginia. There are 201 species just in the genus Carex in the state! But what are sedges and how can they be identified? SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Box Turtles
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a research project to study what habitats Box Turtles use at different times of year so that we and other landowners can know what the best time of year is to mow fields and do other land management practices that might disrupt or even kill Box Turtles. On this second installment of Science Saturdays\, participants will help us get our 2023 season started by looking for turtles we radio-tagged last year and potentially finding new turtles to tag. This is a special opportunity to tag along with our staff researchers and see how field science is done. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. SUMMARY:Bobolink Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. SUMMARY:Young Explorers Camp (June 10-14)
DESCRIPTION:*If you are registering multiple campers\, it is easier if you check-out one at a time (i.e.\, select +1 ticket\, fill out the forms and pay\, then go back and +1 again.  For some reason\, our website software is bewildered by getting info for 2 people on the same transaction.  Sorry for the inconvenience!* \nDuring Young Explorers\, campers spend the morning learning about the natural world through hands-on activities and pure adventuring over our beautiful 900-acre field station. Topics may vary from insects to pond life to the science of smell!  The small group of campers is led by 2 Clifton instructors\, who will help students learn how to prepare for being outdoors and work with others in addition to the natural history of the Piedmont.  Campers must bring their own snacks and reusable water bottles.   \nAges: 5-6 at the time of camp.  *This is a drop-off program* \nTime: 9AM – 12PM\, Monday – Friday \nCost: $95.00.  Please note that the ticket will appear as “Free” until registration opens. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to 30 days before the start of camp will receive a refund\, minus a $50 nonrefundable registration fee.  Cancellations within 30 days of camp start date forfeit full tuition. \nPaperwork Deadline:  You should receive a confirmation email upon registration\, which will contain a link for filling out your camper’s emergency contact form and liability waiver. The deadline for submission of paperwork will be May 1st\, 2024.  If you do not submit your paperwork by this date\, you will be refunded all but the $50 and the spot will be offered to the next person on the wait list.  Paperwork is important for us to plan!   \nVaccination Policy:  All staff and campers aged 5 and above must be up-to-date with all Virginia Board of Health School Immunization requirements for the appropriate age (found here).  \nScholarships:  If you are interested in a scholarship\, please email camps@cliftoninstitute.org before registering so that we can send you a scholarship application.  We don’t want financial limitations to get in the way of your child attending camp!

DESCRIPTION:Dragonflies and damselflies are some of the most mysterious and beautiful animals that live at the Clifton Institute\, and June is the perfect time to search for them. Join us for a workshop that will cover the basics of dragonfly identification and biology. We will then practice what we learned by visiting lakes\, streams\, and fish-free vernal pools\, each of which host distinct dragonfly communities. SUMMARY:Open-access Day for Friends of the Clifton Institute
DESCRIPTION:We invite Friends of the Clifton Institute to come explore the field station on their own every Saturday from mid-January to mid-October. You can become a Friend of Clifton with a minimum annual donation of $40. Your support will help us reach our goals of expanding and improving our education\, restoration\, and research programs this year. Thank you!\n\nBefore attending an open-access day\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here). As you walk our trails\, you can help us take care of the field station by keeping your eyes and ears open to help us learn about the ecosystem we’re a part of and by enjoying and respecting the plants and animals that live here.\n\n\n\nA trail map is available here. Please note that some trails are in the process of being built and many are not marked. Navigation skills and a GPS are recommended. Please stay on the trails\, use common sense\, and proceed at your own risk. \nThe farmhouse is closed to all visitors at this time. There are port-a-potties available in both parking lots. \nWe reserve the right to deny access to our property to anyone who does not obey the rules posted below or is otherwise disruptive to our field station operations. \n\nOn open-access days\, you may park either at the lower parking area (“the Gap”) or at the farm house.\nAll children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.\nYou are welcome to bring your family with you on open-access days. One or two visitors are acceptable as well\, but if this starts to be abused we reserve the right to limit the benefit to family members.\nNo dogs are permitted.\nLeave no trace. We expect you to take all litter with you. It would be even better if you helped us pick up any litter you find! We do not have trash collection facilities.\nTake nothing but photographs. We use our trails to teach kids about the environment and their experiences are much richer if there are still feathers and bones and everything else for them to look at.\nNo swimming\, fishing\, boating\, or any other entry in the ponds.\nNo alcohol is permitted.\nNo horses\, bicycles\, automobiles\, ATVs\, or any other vehicles are allowed on the trails.\nNo hunting is permitted.\n\n
