SUMMARY:NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Every year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 27th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 20th year contributing our data to NABA. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. \nParticipants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  Unless your leader says otherwise\, participants will meet at the Clifton Institute at 9:00 AM. We will meet back here at 3:00 PM to tally our results over a cold glass of lemonade and a slice of watermelon. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \n\nBring: Please bring a lunch and water. We recommend wearing long pants and a broad-brimmed hat and bringing binoculars. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the day before the event. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. \n\n\nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer  participate\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly. \n\n\nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Young Explorers Camp: Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Each day at Young Explorers camp\, children will explore the field station with our naturalists and learn about the plants and animals that live in the northern Virginia Piedmont. In the afternoon\, children will enjoy crafts and games that will expand their knowledge of ecology and the environment. Campers will gain a deep understanding of our natural surroundings and the confidence they need to continue spending time outdoors for years to come. We will do a different set of activities each week so campers can have interesting and enriching experiences by coming to either week individually or both weeks.  Families are welcome and encouraged to register for both weeks but must pay for each session separately. Students will bring their own snacks and lunches from home. \nAges: 7-12 at the time of camp. \nCost: $215.00.  Please note that the ticket will appear as “Free” until registration opens. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to 30 days before the start of camp will receive a full refund\, minus a $50 nonrefundable registration fee. Notice of cancellation must be submitted in writing. Cancellations within 30 days of camp start date forfeit full tuition. \nPaperwork:  Within 3 days of registration\, you will be emailed liability\, medical\, and emergency contact forms to be filled out and returned by April 15\, 2022.  If you do not submit your paperwork by this date\, you will be refunded all but the $50 and the spot will be offered to the next person on the wait list.  Paperwork is important for us to plan!  Please send it to camps@cliftoninstitute.org upon completion! \nVaccination Policy:  All staff and campers aged 5 and above must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19\, in addition to being up-to-date with all Virginia Board of Health School Immunization requirements for the appropriate age (found here). \nMask Policy: All campers and staff are required to have a mask with them at all times. We enforce mask wearing when social distancing is not possible and if inside due to inclement weather. \nScholarships:  If you are interested in a scholarship\, please fill out this Scholarship Application Form and email a completed copy (or photo of it) to camps@cliftoninstitute.org before registering so that we can ensure you are not charged full price.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Meetup and Walk

Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! I’ll give a very brief introduction to nature journaling before we go for a walk on our beautiful 900-acre property. On the walk we’ll stop and journal about whatever we find. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. Adults will be responsible for monitoring their children\, but we would love to have all ages of nature lovers attend. \nBring: Please bring a journal and art supplies. Just a piece of paper and pencil will be enough. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Walk with a Naturalist: Weather Watch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk on our trails with one our naturalists. In August we will be focusing on the weather! Habitat Specialist and weather enthusiast Andrew Eberly will talk a bit about the Virginia’s summer weather and then will narrate some of the afternoon’s weather phenomena on the walk. We focus so much on plants and animals that it’s sometimes easy to forget about the weather that keeps our ecosystem going\, so this is a great opportunity to learn about an underappreciated subject. Please note that this program is from 3 to 5\, as opposed to 1 to 3 like most of our Walks with a Naturalist. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children 12 and up\, accompanied by an adult \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nWhat to bring: Water bottle\, hat\, sunscreen\, binoculars. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside port-o-potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBefore attending this event\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here). \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Nature Club
DESCRIPTION:Over 9 sessions beginning in September and running through May\, the members of Nature Club will work together to create a map of an uncharted piece of the Clifton Institute and build a trail that runs through it. The project will culminate in an unveiling party for the new trail led by the students themselves.  This is a chance for interested\, motivated naturalists to discover corners of the property that not even the staff have seen!  We will focus on new skills each month including cartography\, compass-work\, and plant ID.  By working in the same patch of woods each session and watching it change with the onset of spring\, students will have the opportunity to feel deep connection to a piece of land. Nature Club will meet on the first Saturday of each month 1-3PM on the following dates: \nSeptember 3 \nOctober 1 \nNovember 5 \nDecember 3 \nJanuary 7 \nFebruary 4 \nMarch 4 \nApril 1 \nMay 6- Unveiling Party! \nCost: $90 ($72 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: Youth grades 7-12; this program is drop off only. \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside port-o-potty will be available). We require that everyone have a mask with them in case we need to go inside during inclement weather\, to administer first aid\, or for other reasons. Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation. \n\n\n\nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Piedmont Polliwogs
DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Polliwogs is a monthly program for pre-K children that includes a lesson on a different topic every month\, story time and short nature walk. As of fall 2022\, we are changing registration for Polliwogs: instead of signing up month to month\, you can sign up for a whole series of monthly programs. This will help us keep better track of registrations and plan appropriately for each session. The series will take place on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 on the following dates: September 8\, October 13\, November 10\, December 8\, January 12\, February 9\, March 9\, April 13\, and May 11. \nWe understand that you may have children outside the 2-5-year-old range that need to come along with you to Polliwogs. You are welcome to keep them with you or for them to entertain themselves during the class. It is also fine with us if slightly older children participate. When you register below\, please register and pay for the number of children you expect to participate in the class each month. \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering.  The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* Please also note that we are changing the age range for Nature School from K-5 to Grades 1-5. Thank you for your understanding! \nCost: $90 per child ($75 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Children ages 2-5\, accompanied by a caregiver \nBring: Please bring a snack and drink. There will be a snack break. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:Night-Time Family Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Families with children in grades K-8 are invited to come along as we explore the field station AT NIGHT! We’ll see how long we can walk without flashlights and then explore the woods to look for nocturnal animals and listen to the sounds of the night. We might hear owls screeching and flying squirrels calling and we can expect to see moths and katydids and other insects that are hard to see during the day. This is a special opportunity to see the Clifton Institute at a time of day when we usually don’t have programs and it’s a great way for families to explore nature together. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: Families with children ages 6 and up. \nBring: Please bring a flashlight. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:Raptor Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Every fall raptors migrate south along the Appalachian Mountains. Several species of hawks\, eagles\, and falcons can be seen migrating\, but the biggest spectacles are the days when huge numbers of Broad-winged Hawks fly by. If we’re lucky we might see thousands! One of the expert bird-watchers on our staff will lead the group and discuss how to identify raptors in flight. We will meet at Snickers Gap\, where there’s an excellent view of migrating raptors. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: This program is intended for an adult audience. Interested children accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend. \n\n\nBring: Please bring binoculars. It can be very cold and windy in the gap\, so we also recommend dressing for those conditions and bringing a hot drink in a thermos. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. We hope to see you there! \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Winter Sparrow Workshop
DESCRIPTION:** This event will be held over Zoom **\nGet ready for winter by brushing up on sparrow identification! \nEvery season brings its own challenges for birdwatching. In winter\, similar-looking sparrows can be hard to tell apart and birding by ear becomes more difficult as birds sing less and call more. Join expert birder Nick Newberry and Executive Director Bert Harris to learn some tips for identifying winter sparrows. Nick and Bert will walk you through the field marks of each species and use their years of birding experience to help you learn how to identify sparrows.  Then in the second section of the program Nick and Bert will show sparrow photos to help you practice and test your new skills. This program is intended for beginning and intermediate birders. We will send a Zoom link closer to the date. \nCost:  $10 ($8 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: All ages. \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. \n\n\nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation.
