SUMMARY:Warbler Song Bootcamp *Virtual*
DESCRIPTION:*This is a virtual event. Registration will close at noon on April 12 to make sure everyone gets the Zoom link. If you have not received a Zoom link by that time please email Eleanor at eharris@cliftoninstitute.org. If you would like to register at that time\, you can email Eleanor but she may not see your email in time.* \nBrush up on your warbler songs just before the migrants arrive in droves. We will listen to the songs of each of the migratory warblers that pass through our region in spring\, while looking at spectrograms to help visual learners identify differences in similar songs. We will also briefly discuss habitats where breeding warblers can be found in our area and cover a handful of other migrants such as vireos and thrushes. This workshop will be of interest to birdwatchers of all skill levels. It will definitely be more fun than listening to a warbler song CD in your car! This event will take place over Zoom. As you walk our trails\, you can help us take care of the field station by keeping your eyes and ears open to help us learn about the ecosystem we’re a part of and by enjoying and respecting the plants and animals that live here.\n\n\n\nA trail map is available here. Please note that some trails are in the process of being built and many are not marked. Navigation skills and a GPS are recommended. Please stay on the trails\, use common sense\, and proceed at your own risk. \nThe farmhouse is closed to all visitors at this time. There are port-a-potties available in both parking lots. \nWe reserve the right to deny access to our property to anyone who does not obey the rules posted below or is otherwise disruptive to our field station operations. \n\nOn open-access days\, you may park either at the lower parking area (“the Gap”) or at the farm house.\nAll children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.\nYou are welcome to bring your family with you on open-access days. One or two visitors are acceptable as well\, but if this starts to be abused we reserve the right to limit the benefit to family members.\nNo dogs are permitted.\nLeave no trace. SUMMARY:Nature School : 2023-24
DESCRIPTION:We are in our third full year of offering Nature School!  Students meet every other Wednesday from September through May to learn about different natural history subjects through hands-on research\, restoration\, and exploration. This year\, we are extending the duration to be from 9AM – 1PM\, so that students will bring a picnic lunch to eat (in addition to the usual snacks).  This will allow us to travel farther and dig deeper during each session!  We invite returning and new Nature School students alike to sign up.  The dates for the 2023-24 school year are below: \nSeptember 6 & 20 \nOctober 4 & 18 \nNovember 1\, 15\, & 29 \nDecember 13 (break for last 2 weeks of December) \nJanuary 3\, 17\, & 31 \nFebruary 14 & 28 \nMarch 13 & 27 \nApril 10 & 24 \nMay 8 (Graduation) \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering.  The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $260 per child ($235 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Children in grades 1-5\, drop-off only. \nBring: Please bring a small backpack packed with a full water bottle\, snack\, and a picnic lunch. SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Kestrel Tracking
DESCRIPTION:In this installment of our Science Saturdays series participants will have the opportunity to shadow our kestrel research team. We have been attaching GPS transmitters to kestrels since 2021. This summer we will be attaching fewer transmitters in the past\, but we will still be keeping an eye on a few birds from previous summers and monitoring their nest boxes. We can’t guarantee a kestrel sighting\, but it is likely that we’ll get to see one of our local birds. Depending on how the breeding season is going\, from Clifton we may drive to one or two nearby properties that have kestrel boxes. We will encourage but not require everyone to carpool in as few cars as possible. We’re looking forward to a beautiful day in the field with you! \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water bottle. SUMMARY:Nature Club : 2023-24
DESCRIPTION:Nature Club is a program where middle and high school students who are interested in the natural world can spend time in a nerd-friendly environment.  If they like bones\, insects\, tools\, plants\, fungi\, research\, or simply to be outdoors\, then they have found their people!  The club meets on the first Saturday of every month throughout the school year.  In the 2023-24 year\, we will be focusing on the three tenants of our work at Clifton: Research\, Restoration\, and Education.  Members will conduct research in our grassland in the fall and our vernal pools in late winter spring.  They will assist in the collection of seeds and propagation of native plants to later be transplanted.  Lastly\, they will help create programming for younger students and work on a science communication subject of their own choosing and design.  There will be a chance for students to share their work with the families at the final gathering in May!  Nature Club meets from 1-4PM on the following dates: \nSeptember 2 \nOctober 7 \nNovember 4 \nDecember 2 \nJanuary 6 \nFebruary 3 \nMarch 2 \nApril 6 \nMay 4 \nScholarship Opportunity:  We have 5 full merit-based scholarships available.  To apply\, please fill out our Scholarship Application Google Form by August 29th\, 2023.  If you have any questions\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org). \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering.  The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $125 per student ($100 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Youth grades 7-12; this program is drop off only. \nBring: Please bring a water bottle and snack. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this series\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. DESCRIPTION:We are in our third full year of offering Nature School!  Students meet every other Wednesday from September through May to learn about different natural history subjects through hands-on research\, restoration\, and exploration. This year\, we are extending the duration to be from 9AM – 1PM\, so that students will bring a picnic lunch to eat (in addition to the usual snacks).  This will allow us to travel farther and dig deeper during each session!  We invite returning and new Nature School students alike to sign up.  The dates for the 2023-24 school year are below: \nSeptember 6 & 20 \nOctober 4 & 18 \nNovember 1\, 15\, & 29 \nDecember 13 (break for last 2 weeks of December) \nJanuary 3\, 17\, & 31 \nFebruary 14 & 28 \nMarch 13 & 27 \nApril 10 & 24 \nMay 8 (Graduation) \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering.  The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $260 per child ($235 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Children in grades 1-5\, drop-off only. \nBring: Please bring a small backpack packed with a full water bottle\, snack\, and a picnic lunch. SUMMARY:Piedmont Polliwogs : 2023-24
DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Polliwogs is a monthly program for pre-K children that includes a lesson on a different topic every month\, story time and short nature walk.  Students get to know each other\, grow their independence\, and gain confidence in the outdoors with our skilled instructors.  The 9-month series will take place on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 on the following dates: \nSeptember 14 \nOctober 12 \nNovember 9 \nDecember 14 \nJanuary 11 \nFebruary 8 \nMarch 14 \nApril 11 \nMay 9 \nWe understand that you may have children outside the 2-5-year-old range that need to come along with you to Polliwogs. You are welcome to keep them with you or for them to entertain themselves during the class. It is also fine with us if slightly older children participate. Your support will help us reach our goals of expanding and improving our education\, restoration\, and research programs this year. Thank you!\n\nBefore attending an open-access day\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here). As you walk our trails\, you can help us take care of the field station by keeping your eyes and ears open to help us learn about the ecosystem we’re a part of and by enjoying and respecting the plants and animals that live here.\n\n\n\nA trail map is available here. Please note that some trails are in the process of being built and many are not marked. Navigation skills and a GPS are recommended. Please stay on the trails\, use common sense\, and proceed at your own risk. \nThe farmhouse is closed to all visitors at this time. There are port-a-potties available in both parking lots. \nWe reserve the right to deny access to our property to anyone who does not obey the rules posted below or is otherwise disruptive to our field station operations. \n\nOn open-access days\, you may park either at the lower parking area (“the Gap”) or at the farm house.\nAll children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.\nYou are welcome to bring your family with you on open-access days. DESCRIPTION:*POSTPONED FROM MAY 4 DUE TO RAIN* \nNature journaling is a powerful tool for learning about plants and animals\, a mindful practice for connecting to nature\, and just a great way to spend time outside. Managing Director and passionate nature journaler Eleanor Harris runs quarterly nature journaling meetups to help people develop their nature journaling skills and meet other nature journalers in the area. Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! In May\, we’ll be focusing on flowers! Eleanor will give a brief introduction to the biology of flowers and some ideas for how to include them in your nature journal. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a journal and art supplies. DESCRIPTION:Sedges are one of the most diverse and ecologically important plant groups in Virginia. There are 201 species just in the genus Carex in the state! But what are sedges and how can they be identified? Join sedge expert Greg Chapman to get answers to these questions and more\, as we partner with Virginia Working Landscapes to get more familiar with these plants! \nThere will be a short lecture followed by a walk to practice finding and identifying sedges in the wild. DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a research project to study what habitats Box Turtles use at different times of year so that we and other landowners can know what the best time of year is to mow fields and do other land management practices that might disrupt or even kill Box Turtles. On this second installment of Science Saturdays\, participants will help us get our 2023 season started by looking for turtles we radio-tagged last year and potentially finding new turtles to tag. SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. We hope to see you there! \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!
