DESCRIPTION:Spend the afternoon with Education Associate Bridget Bradshaw learning about the bizarre and colorful world of our most diverse animal kin—the insects! The class will begin by covering basic insect biology and taxonomy at the peach house. The rest of the time will be spent catching and identifying insects from a smorgasbord of Clifton’s habitats like lush fields\, leaf litter\, and beaver ponds. DESCRIPTION:If you’re learning to identify plants\, learning the common families can really help narrow down your options when you’re faced with an unfamiliar specimen. If you already know a few plants\, learning their families can provide a useful framework to help organize all the species rattling around in your brain. Whatever level you’re at\, learning to identify the plant families around us is a really fun way to get to know the natural world. In this program\, Managing Director Eleanor Harris will give a brief talk on the ways to identify the most common plant families in Virginia. SUMMARY:Bobolink Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. SUMMARY:Young Scientists Research Experience (June 19 - 23)
DESCRIPTION:During this unique experience\, students will explore and carry out their own research project. Young Scientists will engage in inquiry-based\, hands-on learning as they develop their own research questions\, collect and analyze data\, and present their results\, all under the guidance of an experienced mentor. This opportunity is perfect for middle and high school students with an interest in the environmental and natural sciences and the desire to experience ecological fieldwork. We welcome motivated students who are excited to spend the week at our beautiful\, 900-acre field station in the northern Virginia Piedmont in the company of like-minded peers. \nExample research questions include: \n\nHow does road noise affect the singing of birds\, frogs\, and other animals?\nWhere on the field station is there the most evidence of deer and other mammals?\nAre there more insects on plants that are native to Virginia or on exotic plants?\n\nAges: 13-18 at the time of camp. \nTime: 9AM – 4PM\, Monday – Friday* \n*There will be a presentation of student research projects on Friday evening\, open to friends and families. \nCost: $350.00.  Please note that the ticket will appear as “Free” until registration opens. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to 30 days before the start of camp will receive a refund\, minus a $50 nonrefundable registration fee.  Cancellations within 30 days of camp start date forfeit full tuition. \nPaperwork:  Within 1 week of registration\, you will be emailed liability\, medical\, and emergency contact forms to be filled out and returned by May 31st\, 2023.  If you do not submit your paperwork by this date\, you will be refunded all but the $50 and the spot will be offered to the next person on the wait list.  Paperwork is important for us to plan!  Please send it to camps@cliftoninstitute.org upon completion! \nVaccination Policy:  All staff and campers aged 5 and above must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19\, in addition to being up-to-date with all Virginia Board of Health School Immunization requirements for the appropriate age (found here).  Masks will be provided and required to be worn by all staff and campers should we need to be indoors during inclement weather or while administering first aid.   \nScholarships:  If you are interested in a scholarship\, please email camps@cliftoninstitute.org before registering so that we can send you a scholarship application.  We don’t want financial limitations to get in the way of your child attending camp!

The map of the count circle is here. The circle includes a wide variety of aquatic habitats\, including a sphagnum bog\, fish-free marshes\, lakes with abundant lily pads\, and a variety of clean streams and rivers that range from tiny seeps all the way up to the Rappahannock River. This interesting area has not received as much study as nearby northern Virginia\, but 72 species of dragonflies and damselflies have already been documented inside the circle. In 2022\, we found 55 species of dragonflies and damselflies\, including Laura’s and Rapids Clubtails\, Sphagnum Sprite\, Appalachian Jewelwing\, Amber-winged Spreading\, Lilypad Forktail\, and Turquoise Bluet. Who knows what else we’ll find this year! We will divide the circle up into several areas\, which teams of people will cover\, similar to a Christmas Bird Count or NABA butterfly count. We will let you know where to meet closer to the date. The count is open to people of all experience levels. We welcome dragonfly experts as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these fascinating insects. \nThis event is free but registration is required. Please let us know if you live inside the count circle and you have a fish-free pond or marsh or a pond with lily pads or other emergent aquatic vegetation on your property that you would like to be included in the count. SUMMARY:Young Explorers Camp (June 26 - 30)
DESCRIPTION:During Young Explorers camp (previously Piedmont Polliwogs)\, your early learner will explore and engage with nature on our beautiful 900-acre field station. We aim to inspire feelings of curiosity and wonder for the natural world\, while promoting healthy minds and bodies as children play and learn outside. \nEach day has a different theme\, which is explored through hands-on activities\, a children’s book\, and a short sensory walk.  Returning campers should note that this is now a drop-off program\, so each day will also include elements that build independence\, such as learning how to open snack\, asking for help\, and helping others! \nAges: 5-6 at the time of camp.  *This is a drop-off program* \nTime: 9AM – 12PM\, Monday – Friday \nCost: $95.00.  Please note that the ticket will appear as “Free” until registration opens. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to 30 days before the start of camp will receive a refund\, minus a $50 nonrefundable registration fee.  Cancellations within 30 days of camp start date forfeit full tuition. \nPaperwork:  Within 1 week of registration\, you will be emailed liability\, medical\, and emergency contact forms to be filled out and returned by May 31st\, 2023.  If you do not submit your paperwork by this date\, you will be refunded all but the $50 and the spot will be offered to the next person on the wait list.  Paperwork is important for us to plan!  Please send it to camps@cliftoninstitute.org upon completion! \nVaccination Policy:  All staff and campers aged 5 and above must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19\, in addition to being up-to-date with all Virginia Board of Health School Immunization requirements for the appropriate age (found here).  Masks will be provided and required to be worn by all staff and campers should we need to be indoors during inclement weather or while administering first aid.   \nScholarships:  If you are interested in a scholarship\, please email camps@cliftoninstitute.org before registering so that we can send you a scholarship application.  We don’t want financial limitations to get in the way of your child attending camp!

This summer we will host our 28th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 21th year contributing our data to NABA. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. DESCRIPTION:Hey grownups! Have you ever wished you could go to summer camp? Well\, now you can! This August we are offering our third annual weekend-long Nature Camp for Grownups. Now with an overnight option! \nActivities will start on the morning of August 26 and conclude on the afternoon of August 27. Activities will include short workshops (for example on insect orders or plant families)\, nature walks\, nature journaling\, crafts\, and more. And of course we’ll be making friends and having fun the whole time! \nWe will tent camp near the farmhouse. Campers will have access to a bathroom in the farmhouse but not a shower. If you prefer to go home on Saturday night you can meet back up with us for or after breakfast on Sunday morning. We will provide simple lunches\, dinner\, and breakfast. All materials for crafts and other projects will be included. \nTimes: 10:00AM on August 26 and 10:00AM to 3:30PM on August 27 \n\nCost: $150 ($125 for Friends of the Clifton Institute). \n\n\nAge: Adults only. \n\n\nBring: Snacks\, water bottle\, a nature journal if you have one. SUMMARY:Bird Hill Grassland and Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the residence of our co-directors to experience a remnant prairie\, a planted meadow\, and a native plant garden. The remnant prairie on the property hosts a remarkable assemblage of native wildflowers and grasses over sandstone bedrock. Bert and Eleanor are managing the prairie with mowing\, burning\, and invasive plant control. They have also planted a one-acre meadow on an old lawn and they’ve worked with Hill House Nursery to establish a native plant garden. \nThis program is a case study of how landowners can manage their land to benefit native plants and animals on a relatively small property. \nLocation: Near Orlean\, VA.
