SUMMARY:Young Naturalists Camp: Week 2 (July 15-19)
DESCRIPTION:*If you are registering multiple campers\, it is easier if you check-out one at a time (i.e.\, select +1 ticket\, fill out the forms and pay\, then go back and +1 again.  For some reason\, our website software is bewildered by getting info for 2 people on the same transaction.  Sorry for the inconvenience!* \nAt Young Naturalists camp\, children will explore the field station with our skilled staff and learn about the plants and animals that live in the northern Virginia Piedmont. Each week will follow a different theme\, so you can sign up for both weeks and still learn new things! \nEach day begins with a Morning Workshop where campers dive deep into the subject for the day\, which prepares them for the rest of the morning which is spent exploring Clifton’s 900-acre preserve.  After a picnic lunch on the front lawn\, students are given the chance to cool down by playing in the hose before getting ready for Afternoon Choices.  Afternoon Choices give campers agency in shaping their camp experience by picking what they prefer to do from a set of 3 options which are different each day.  These could include things like water coloring at the beaver pond\, hiking to the lichen rocks\, playing camouflage\, or foraging for wine berries! Lastly\, we give each camper a journal and conclude each day by sitting and reflecting in small groups before ending with Closing Circle–a chance to share what we liked\, what we were challenged by\, and things we’re looking forward to. \nFamilies are welcome and encouraged to register for both weeks but must pay for each session separately. Students will bring their own snacks and lunches from home each day. \nAges: 7-12 at the time of camp. \nTime: 9AM – 4PM\, Monday – Friday \nCost: $215.00.  Please note that the ticket will appear as “Free” until registration opens. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations prior to 30 days before the start of camp will receive a refund\, minus a $50 nonrefundable registration fee.  Cancellations within 30 days of camp start date forfeit full tuition. \nPaperwork Deadline:  You should receive a confirmation email upon registration\, which will contain a link for filling out your camper’s emergency contact form and liability waiver. The deadline for submission of paperwork will be May 1st\, 2024.  If you do not submit your paperwork by this date\, you will be refunded all but the $50 and the spot will be offered to the next person on the wait list.  Paperwork is important for us to plan!   \nVaccination Policy:  All staff and campers aged 5 and above must be up-to-date with all Virginia Board of Health School Immunization requirements for the appropriate age (found here).  \nScholarships:  If you are interested in a scholarship\, please email camps@cliftoninstitute.org before registering so that we can send you a scholarship application.  We don’t want financial limitations to get in the way of your child attending camp!

SUMMARY:Nature Club
DESCRIPTION:Over 9 sessions beginning in September and running through May\, the members of Nature Club will work together to create a map of an uncharted piece of the Clifton Institute and build a trail that runs through it. Nature Club will meet on the first Saturday of each month 1-3PM on the following dates: \nSeptember 3 \nOctober 1 \nNovember 5 \nDecember 3 \nJanuary 7 \nFebruary 4 \nMarch 4 \nApril 1 \nMay 6- Unveiling Party! \nCost: $90 ($72 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: Youth grades 7-12; this program is drop off only. \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). SUMMARY:Nature School: Spring Semester
DESCRIPTION:This series\, which takes place between January and May\, is a chance for young students to dip their toes into 10 different topics as we watch the land around us become green again! Each session will include time spent journaling\, learning about science\, and going on a hike. The younger group will also be read a story. \nStudents are expected to bring their own snacks\, water\, and backpack but all other materials will be provided. We will divide into two groups split roughly by age for most of the time\, to allow for students to engage in activities that are appropriately challenging. Therefore\, we ask that students come prepared for the possibility of being in a different group from their siblings. We also ask that children who are not yet in kindergarten or who will be uncomfortable being away from a caregiver participate in our Piedmont Polliwogs programs. We are outside for the duration of every session\, rain or shine\, so dress for the weather! \nWe will meet every other Wednesday from 9:00AM to 12:00PM on the following dates: \nJanuary 5 \nJanuary 19 \nFebruary 2 \nFebruary 16 \nMarch 2 \nMarch 16 \nMarch 30 \nApril 13 \nApril 27 \nMay 11 \n\n\nCost: $100 ($80 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: Children in grades K-5\, drop-off only. \n\n\nBring: Water bottle\, snack\, and backpack. We also recommend a small towel\, seat pad\, or piece of tarp to sit on on the trail. \n\n\nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). We require that everyone have a mask with them in case we need to go inside during inclement weather\, to administer first aid\, or for other reasons. SUMMARY:Foliage and Phenology Class
DESCRIPTION:Phenology is the study of seasons in nature. Tracking when flowers bloom\, when animals migrate\, when mushrooms appear\, or when anything else happens in nature\, helps scientists understand our ecosystem and how it’s changing over time. Fall is a great time to study phenology because we can watch the leaves change colors all around us. In this class\, students in grades 3-8 will learn about phenology and fall foliage and they will have the opportunity to participate in a community science project about the phenology of foliage. We hope we’ll see your young scientist there! \nCost: $10 ($8 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Grades 3-8\, drop-off only \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nWhat to bring: Hat\, water bottle\, binoculars \n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside port-o-potty will be available).
