SUMMARY:2026 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but people are still welcome to join us! If you’re interested\, email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org.\nEvery year community scientists help count butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). This summer we will host our 30th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 23rd year contributing our data to NABA! \nButterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  We will meet at the Clifton Institute at 4 PM to tally our results over cold drinks (provided). \nCheck out what we’ve seen in previous years here! \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water. We recommend wearing long pants and a broad-brimmed hat and bringing binoculars. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:27th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:*If you register\, Bridget will email you with a team assignment no later than Monday\, 14th December! The leader of that team will tell you the start time (usually around 7AM) and it will be up to you how long you would like to count for.* \nJoin us for the 27th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December!  Our goal?  Count as many birds as we can in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats–grasslands\, forests\, lakes\, backyards\, and even parking lots.  There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow\, and counters get to explore parts of Fauquier county that they might not normally see.  Most importantly\, we will be contributing to an international community science project reaching back over 120 years which informs bird conservation in North America. \nThis event is for birders of any experience level.  Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia and get to know other birdwatchers in the area.  In order to cover the entire circle we split into 9 teams.  Each team is led by an experienced birder.  If you are interested in leading a team\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org).  Depending on the team\, you may spend the day walking\, driving\, or both in order to cover your area.  At the end of the day\, teams are invited back to the peach farmhouse at Clifton for hot chili\, cornbread\, and drinks for our tally rally!  This is where we have a chance to all get together\, count up the birds from the day\, and swap stories. \n*Please note: Depending on which team you are assigned\, you may NOT be meeting at the Clifton Institute in the morning.  Team leaders will tell you when and where to meet at the start of the day\, which is typically around sunrise.   \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome.
