SUMMARY:26th Annual The Plains / Airlie Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 26th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December!  Our goal?  Count as many birds as we can in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats–grasslands\, forests\, lakes\, backyards\, and even parking lots.  There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow\, and counters get to explore parts of Fauquier county that they might not normally see.  Most importantly\, we will be contributing to an international community science project reaching back over 120 years which informs bird conservation in North America. \nThis event is for birders of any experience level.  Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia and get to know other birdwatchers in the area.  In order to cover the entire circle we split into 9 teams.  Each team is led by an experienced birder.  If you are interested in leading a team\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org).  Depending on the team\, you may spend the day walking\, driving\, or both in order to cover your area.  At the end of the day\, teams are invited back to the peach farmhouse at Clifton for hot chili\, cornbread\, and drinks for our tally rally!  This is where we have a chance to all get together\, count up the birds from the day\, and swap stories. \n*Please note: Depending on which team you are assigned\, you may NOT be meeting at the Clifton Institute in the morning.  Team leaders will tell you when and where to meet at the start of the day\, which is typically around sunrise.   \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring binoculars if available. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. We look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Lawn Lab Community Day & Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:What happens when we stop mowing our lawns? That’s one of the questions we’re trying to answer at Lawn Lab\, and we need your help! \nWe invite you to join us for the second annual Lawn Lab bioblitz. Our goal is to collect data on what plants and animals call Lawn Lab home. If you have experience identifying plants and insects\, that’s great. If not\, we will give you all the training and tools you’ll need. \nLawn Lab is a long-term habitat restoration experiment and partnership between the Clifton Institute\, the Fauquier County Public School system\, and Fauquier County’s We Need Bees Committee\, which oversees the county’s status as a Bee City USA affiliate. In this project\, students from Grace Miller Elementary School and Liberty High School\, along with educators and scientists from the Clifton Institute\, will study the effects of reducing mowing on the biodiversity of lawns. \nPlease park in the Grace Miller Elementary School parking lot. The experimental fields are a very short walk (a couple hundred yards) southeast of the parking lot. There will be signs\, but you should be able to see our tables and staff from the parking lots and as you drive in along Catlett Road. \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages. \nDate and time: subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. If we need to cancel or postpone\, we will also post any updates on our Facebook page. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe are grateful to support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust\, the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation\, the Kortlandt Fund\, the Warrenton Garden Club\, the Volgenau Foundation\, and individual donors for Lawn Lab. \n

SUMMARY:2025 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are welcome to join us! Email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org to sign up.\nEvery year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 30th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 23rd year contributing our data to NABA. \nButterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  We will meet at the Clifton Institute at 4 PM to tally our results over cold drinks (provided). \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water. We recommend wearing long pants and a broad-brimmed hat and bringing binoculars. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Clifton Dragonfly Count 2025
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are still welcome to join us! Please email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org to learn more.\nJoin us for our fifth annual Dragonfly Count! Our goals are to learn which species of dragonflies and damselflies are found in our area\, to monitor changes in their populations\, and to encourage everyone to learn more about Odonates. \nThe map of the count circle is here. The circle includes a wide variety of aquatic habitats\, including a sphagnum bog\, fish-free marshes\, lakes with abundant lily pads\, and a variety of clean streams and rivers that range from tiny seeps all the way up to the Rappahannock River. This interesting area has not received as much study as nearby northern Virginia\, but 72 species of dragonflies and damselflies have already been documented inside the circle. \nWe will divide the circle up into several areas\, which teams of people will cover\, similar to a Christmas Bird Count or NABA butterfly count. We will let you know where to meet closer to the date. The count is open to people of all experience levels. We welcome dragonfly experts as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these fascinating insects. \nThis event is free but registration is required. \nEmail Bert Harris (bharris@cliftoninstitute.org) with any questions or if you would like to lead one of the teams. Please let us know if you live inside the count circle and you have a fish-free pond or marsh or a pond with lily pads or other emergent aquatic vegetation on your property that you would like to be included in the count. \nWe are partnering with the Fauquier County Parks and Recreation Department\, Goose Creek Association\, Virginia Outdoors Foundation\, and White House Farm Foundation on this event. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: It will be hot and we’ll be spending time near or in the water. Shorts and sturdy sandals or rubber boots are usually best\, but long pants can come in handy as well. Please bring sunscreen\, sun hat\, binoculars (important)\, camera\, insect net\, and plenty of water. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Vernal Pool Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:In this installment of our Science Saturdays series participants will have the opportunity to participate in our vernal pool monitoring project. Vernal pools are fish-free bodies of water that are safe for amphibians to breed in. Here at Clifton\, we have multiple made by beavers\, humans\, and natural depressions\, where Spotted Salamanders\, Jefferson Salamanders\, Eastern Newts\, Wood Frogs\, and other amphibians breed. Each spring we monitor the water levels and quality in each pool and survey for eggs and adults to keep track of our amphibian populations are faring. It’s never a certainty\, but it is likely that we will see adult amphibians in at least one of the pools. This is a special opportunity to visit an amazing habitat and to learn about the science going on here at Clifton. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) SUMMARY:Lawn Lab Grand Opening and Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:This fall the Clifton Institute\, in collaboration with Fauquier County Public Schools and the Fauquier County We Need Bees Committee\, is beginning an exciting new project: Lawn Lab. This experiment is all about studying what happens to life in lawns that only get mowed once a year instead of every week. Clifton staff along with students from Grace Miller Elementary School and Liberty High School will be collecting data on changes in plant and animal communities that live in a 3-acre lawn on school grounds as 2 of those acres are taken out of the normal mowing schedule. The adjacent acre will get mowed once a week as per usual. This project is a rare example of a win-win-win-win: students will spend time outside learning how to identify native plants and animals and getting hands-on experience doing scientific research\, the school campus will become better habitat for pollinators\, the county will spend less money and emit less pollution by mowing less often\, and the experiment will serve as a demonstration plot to people in the community. \nWe invite you to join us for a grand opening and bioblitz on October 19. Our goal is to collect baseline data: what plants and animals already call the Lawn Lab home? Once we have this information\, we can visit each year and see what new plant and animals show up (or which ones disappear). We don’t expect high diversity this year\, but you never know what we’ll find. If you have experience identifying plants and insects\, that’s great. If not\, we will give you all the training and tools you’ll need. We’ll send participants out in small teams to survey sections of the experimental fields and we’ll keep a leader board running to see who can find the most species! We’ll also have family-friendly activities for the younger naturalists among us. \nAt 3:30 we’ll take a break to have an official opening ceremony\, with snacks\, drinks\, and brief remarks. \nThis event is a chance to get in on the ground floor of this exciting project\, contribute to science\, and join the local community of people who want to learn about and take care of native biodiversity! SUMMARY:2024 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED BUT YOU ARE STILL WELCOME TO JOIN US. Please email Bert at bharris@cliftoninstitute.org by 5 PM on Thursday July 18th if you’d like to participate. \nEvery year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 29th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 22nd year contributing our data to NABA. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! SUMMARY:Clifton Dragonfly Count 2024
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED BUT WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU JOIN US! PLEASE EMAIL BHARRIS@CLIFTONINSTITUTE.ORG if you’re interested. \nJoin us for our fourth annual Dragonfly Count! Email Bert Harris (bharris@cliftoninstitute.org) with any questions or if you would like to lead one of the teams. Please let us know if you live inside the count circle and you have a fish-free pond or marsh or a pond with lily pads or other emergent aquatic vegetation on your property that you would like to be included in the count. We are partnering with the Fauquier County Parks and Recreation Department\, Goose Creek Association\, Virginia Outdoors Foundation\, and White House Farm Foundation on this event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Box Turtles
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a research project to study what habitats Box Turtles use at different times of year so that we and other landowners can know what the best time of year is to mow fields and do other land management practices that might disrupt or even kill Box Turtles. On this second installment of Science Saturdays\, participants will help us get our 2023 season started by looking for turtles we radio-tagged last year and potentially finding new turtles to tag. This is a special opportunity to tag along with our staff researchers and see how field science is done. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Kestrel Tracking
DESCRIPTION:In this installment of our Science Saturdays series participants will have the opportunity to shadow our kestrel research team. We have been attaching GPS transmitters to kestrels since 2021. This summer we will be attaching fewer transmitters in the past\, but we will still be keeping an eye on a few birds from previous summers and monitoring their nest boxes. We can’t guarantee a kestrel sighting\, but it is likely that we’ll get to see one of our local birds. Depending on how the breeding season is going\, from Clifton we may drive to one or two nearby properties that have kestrel boxes. We will encourage but not require everyone to carpool in as few cars as possible. We’re looking forward to a beautiful day in the field with you! \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water bottle. Binoculars are recommended. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:The 24th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 24th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December! Children must be accompanied by an adult.\n \nBring: Please bring binoculars if available.\n \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Grass Identification Workshop and Survey
DESCRIPTION:Since 2019 we have been working to restore a 100-acre field that was dominated by Tall Fescue into a diverse native grassland. In cooperation with Virginia Working Landscapes and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation\, we are conducting an experiment to test which of eight methods are best for establishing and maintaining native plants. In this workshop we will give a brief introduction to the restoration experiment and teach you how to identify common grass species. Then we’ll walk about half a mile out into our grassland where we’ll practice our grass identification skills while learning about the methods our scientists use to study the results of the different treatments. We’re looking forward to a beautiful day in the field with you! \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:Third Annual Dragonfly Count
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED BUT ADDITIONAL PEOPLE ARE STILL WELCOME. PLEASE EMAIL BERT AT BHARRIS@CLIFTONINSTITUTE.ORG IF YOU’D LIKE TO ATTEND. \nJoin us for our third annual Dragonfly Count! Our goals are to learn which species of dragonflies and damselflies are found in our area\, to monitor changes in their populations\, and to encourage everyone to learn more about Odonates. The map of the count circle is here. In 2022\, we found 55 species of dragonflies and damselflies\, including Laura’s and Rapids Clubtails\, Sphagnum Sprite\, Appalachian Jewelwing\, Amber-winged Spreading\, Lilypad Forktail\, and Turquoise Bluet. Who knows what else we’ll find this year! We will divide the circle up into several areas\, which teams of people will cover\, similar to a Christmas Bird Count or NABA butterfly count. We will let you know where to meet closer to the date. The count is open to people of all experience levels. We welcome dragonfly experts as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these fascinating insects. \nThis event is free but registration is required. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: It will be hot and we’ll be spending time near or in the water. Shorts and sturdy sandals or rubber boots are usually best\, but long pants can come in handy as well. Please bring sunscreen\, sun hat\, binoculars (ESSENTIAL)\, camera\, insect net\, and plenty of water. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event.

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Kestrel Watch
DESCRIPTION:In what we hope will become a regular occurrence\, we are inviting the public to participate in one of our ongoing research projects. This time you’ll help us track American Kestrels that have been outfitted with GPS transmitters\, collect vegetation data in different types of fields\, and visit ink-pad tracks to see what kinds of rodents have been visiting. This is a great opportunity to see what it’s like to do field research and to learn about some fascinating native species. We will start here at the Clifton Institute and then drive to a few nearby properties where we know kestrels are hanging out. From Clifton\, we will encourage but not require everyone to carpool in as few cars as possible. We’re looking forward to a beautiful day in the field with you! \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults only. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water bottle. Binoculars are recommended. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Every year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 27th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 20th year contributing our data to NABA. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. \nParticipants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  Unless your leader says otherwise\, participants will meet at the Clifton Institute at 9:00 AM. We will meet back here at 3:00 PM to tally our results over a cold glass of lemonade and a slice of watermelon. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \n\nBring: Please bring a lunch and water. We recommend wearing long pants and a broad-brimmed hat and bringing binoculars. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. SUMMARY:Box Turtle Community Science Survey
DESCRIPTION:We are starting a research project study box turtles. We want to know what habitats they use\, what time of year they’re most active\, how big their territories are and how much overlap neighboring territories have\, and most importantly what we can do to help conserve this long-lived species. To start\, we need to have a better idea of how many box turtles there are on our property and where we can find them. And we need your help! In late May or early June\, we are going to wait for rainy weather and spend a day walking all of our trails looking for box turtles. We’ll divide into teams to cover more ground and the more eyes the better! No experience needed\, but we will be walking on uneven and potentially steep trails. \nWe put May 18 as the date as we expect that will be the earliest possible survey date\, but we will wait for the right weather and email registrants with more information. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \n\n\nBring: Please bring lunch\, snacks\, and water. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes and a hat. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Every year the community science platform iNaturalist organizes the City Nature Challenge\, a friendly competition between cities all over the world to see who can find the most species\, make the most observations\, and involve the most people in community science. This year the Challenge will take place from April 29 to May 2\, but we’ll be focusing our efforts on April 30 and contributing our observations to the Washington\, DC Metro Area team. \nOn April 30 from 10AM to 4PM\, we will have tables where you can learn how to use iNaturalist\, get a map to your very own little patch of the property to survey and photograph\, see examples of a few common species\, and play a game to practice using a dichotomous key. The only thing you need in order to participate is a camera or phone and a willingness to slow down and look closely. (It would help to download the iNaturalist app before you arrive.) Don’t worry about identifying all of the plants\, animals\, and fungi you photograph!  iNaturalist will help you make a good guess and nerds from around the world (or here at Clifton) will identify them the following week. \nHere at the Clifton Institute we use iNaturalist every day to keep track of what we find on our property.  The current count is a whopping 2\,127 species! This is a great way for families and adults alike to help us grow that number\, spend some time outside during a beautiful time of year\, and learn about Virginia’s plants and animals. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: All ages. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.) \n\n\nBring: Please bring your smartphone or a camera. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check our Facebook page on the morning of the event in case of inclement weather. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nBy attending this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n\n
