SUMMARY:2025 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are welcome to join us! Email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org to sign up.\nEvery year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 30th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 23rd year contributing our data to NABA. \nButterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  We will meet at the Clifton Institute at 4 PM to tally our results over cold drinks (provided). \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water. DESCRIPTION:Hey grownups! Have you ever wished you could go to summer camp? Well\, now you can! This October we are offering our fifth annual weekend-long Nature Camp for Grownups! \nActivities will start on the morning of October 11 and conclude on the afternoon of October 12. Activities will include short workshops (for example on insect orders or plant families)\, nature walks\, nature journaling\, crafts\, and more. And of course we’ll be making friends and having fun the whole time! \nWe will have the option to tent camp overnight near the farmhouse. Campers will have access to a bathroom in the farmhouse but not a shower. If you prefer to go home on Saturday night you can meet back up with us for or after breakfast on Sunday morning. We will provide simple lunches\, dinner\, and breakfast. All materials for crafts and other projects will be included. \nTimes: 10:00AM on October 11 to 3:30PM on October 12 \nCost: $150 ($125 for Friends of the Clifton Institute). \nAge: Adults only. \nBring: Snacks\, water bottle\, a nature journal if you have one. If you will be camping\, please bring a tent\, sleeping bag\, sleeping pad\, and any other equipment you need to be comfortable. SUMMARY:Intermediate Lichen Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This program is full but if you have your own dissecting microscope and you’d like to join us please email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org.\nAre you ready to take a casual interest in lichens to the next level? This special all-day workshop is intended for keen beginners and intermediates who would like to advance their identification abilities. \nWe’ll start with a presentation on lichen identification\, with a focus on the terminology that is used in dichotomous keys. After the presentation we’ll go and collect lichens in the mature forests and metabasalt rock outcrops on the institute’s 900 acres. After lunch (included)\, we’ll look at the specimens under dissecting and compound microscopes. We’ll do chemical tests and examine spores. We will also key things out as a group and individually. \nWe will provide microscopes\, dichotomous keys\, and chemicals. \nAge: Adults only. \nCost: $75\, which goes toward supporting programs at Clifton. \nMaximum enrollment: 4 people but up to 8 people welcome if you can bring your own microscopes \nAbout the program leader: Bert Harris is a Co-Director of the Clifton Institute. SUMMARY:26th Annual The Plains / Airlie Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 26th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December!  Our goal?  Count as many birds as we can in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats–grasslands\, forests\, lakes\, backyards\, and even parking lots.  There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow\, and counters get to explore parts of Fauquier county that they might not normally see.  Most importantly\, we will be contributing to an international community science project reaching back over 120 years which informs bird conservation in North America. \nThis event is for birders of any experience level.  Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia and get to know other birdwatchers in the area.  In order to cover the entire circle we split into 9 teams.  Each team is led by an experienced birder.  If you are interested in leading a team\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org).  Depending on the team\, you may spend the day walking\, driving\, or both in order to cover your area.  At the end of the day\, teams are invited back to the peach farmhouse at Clifton for hot chili\, cornbread\, and drinks for our tally rally!  This is where we have a chance to all get together\, count up the birds from the day\, and swap stories. \n*Please note: Depending on which team you are assigned\, you may NOT be meeting at the Clifton Institute in the morning.  Team leaders will tell you when and where to meet at the start of the day\, which is typically around sunrise.   \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome. SUMMARY:Moss Identification Workshop with Simon Willig
DESCRIPTION:Join Arlington County naturalist Simon Willig to learn about the incredible mosses and liverworts that are all around us. We will discuss how mosses work\, how they interact with the environment\, and how to identify them. After lunch (included) we will collect samples around the Clifton Institute and use microscopes to identify them by their beautiful microscopic features. The mosses of Virginia are under-studied\, so we may even find a new species for Fauquier County! \nNo experience with mosses is necessary–beginners welcome! \nThis program is limited to eight participants. \nCost: $75.  All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects.
