SUMMARY:Bobolink Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. SUMMARY:Locust Run Woodland Walk
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with the Piedmont chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society for a special walk! This site hosts a nice variety of habitats from rich riparian forest dominated by Tulip Poplar\, Ironwood\, and Witch Hazel along Locust Run\, to open hilly forests. The property was clear-cut approximately 12 years ago\, and that disturbance has allowed the persistence of two patches of the globally rare and imperilled Torrey’s Mountain-mint. Other exciting open woodland species at the site include Featherbells (new for Fauquier County)\, Bashful Bullrush\, Clasping Milkweed\, Whorled Rosinweed\, Forked Bluecurls\, Rose-pink\, Allegheny Chinkapin\, and Bigtooth Aspen. The bedrock is metasandstone which leads to a very acidic soil in most areas\, but there are richer areas (Little Heartleaf) and clearly some basic areas as well (Maidenhair Spleenwort and Wood Anemone; new for Fauquier County). \nRegistration is through VNPS: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/locust-run-woodland-walk-tickets-902470622927

DESCRIPTION:Hey grownups! Have you ever wished you could go to summer camp? Well\, now you can! \nCamp will start on the morning of August 31 and conclude on the afternoon of September 1. Activities will include short workshops (for example on insect orders or plant families)\, nature walks\, nature journaling\, crafts\, campfires\, and more. And of course we’ll be making friends and having fun the whole time! \nThere will be the opportunity for campers to…well…camp!  For those who don’t have camping equipment\, we have plenty to loan.  Campers will have access to a bathroom in the farmhouse but not a shower. If folks prefer to go home on Saturday night\, they can meet back up with us for or after breakfast on Sunday morning. We will provide simple lunches\, dinner\, and breakfast. All materials for crafts and other projects will be included. \nTimes: 10:00AM on August 31 to to 3:30PM on September 1 \n\nCost: $150 ($125 for Friends of the Clifton Institute). \n\n\nAge: Adults only. \n\n\nBring: Snacks\, water bottle\, a nature journal if you have one. SUMMARY:Lawn Lab Grand Opening and Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:This fall the Clifton Institute\, in collaboration with Fauquier County Public Schools and the Fauquier County We Need Bees Committee\, is beginning an exciting new project: Lawn Lab. This experiment is all about studying what happens to life in lawns that only get mowed once a year instead of every week. Clifton staff along with students from Grace Miller Elementary School and Liberty High School will be collecting data on changes in plant and animal communities that live in a 3-acre lawn on school grounds as 2 of those acres are taken out of the normal mowing schedule. The adjacent acre will get mowed once a week as per usual. This project is a rare example of a win-win-win-win: students will spend time outside learning how to identify native plants and animals and getting hands-on experience doing scientific research\, the school campus will become better habitat for pollinators\, the county will spend less money and emit less pollution by mowing less often\, and the experiment will serve as a demonstration plot to people in the community. \nWe invite you to join us for a grand opening and bioblitz on October 19. Our goal is to collect baseline data: what plants and animals already call the Lawn Lab home? Once we have this information\, we can visit each year and see what new plant and animals show up (or which ones disappear). We don’t expect high diversity this year\, but you never know what we’ll find. If you have experience identifying plants and insects\, that’s great. If not\, we will give you all the training and tools you’ll need. We’ll send participants out in small teams to survey sections of the experimental fields and we’ll keep a leader board running to see who can find the most species! We’ll also have family-friendly activities for the younger naturalists among us. \nAt 3:30 we’ll take a break to have an official opening ceremony\, with snacks\, drinks\, and brief remarks. \nThis event is a chance to get in on the ground floor of this exciting project\, contribute to science\, and join the local community of people who want to learn about and take care of native biodiversity! All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by a caregiver. \nWe are grateful to support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust\, the Kortlandt Fund\, the Warrenton Garden Club\, and individual donors for Lawn Lab. \nPlease park in the Grace Miller Elementary School parking lot. The experimental fields are a very short walk (a couple hundred yards) southeast of the parking lot.
