SUMMARY:Bird Hill Grassland and Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the residence of our co-directors to experience a remnant prairie\, a planted meadow\, and a native plant garden. The remnant prairie on the property hosts a remarkable assemblage of native wildflowers and grasses over sandstone bedrock. Bert and Eleanor are managing the prairie with mowing\, burning\, and invasive plant control. They have also planted a one-acre meadow on an old lawn and they’ve worked with Hill House Nursery to establish a native plant garden. \nThis program is a case study of how landowners can manage their land to benefit native plants and animals on a relatively small property. \nLocation: Near Orlean\, VA. Registered attendees will be emailed the address and directions.\nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Nature journaling is a powerful tool for learning about plants and animals\, a mindful practice for connecting to nature\, and just a great way to spend time outside. Managing Director and passionate nature journaler Eleanor Harris runs quarterly nature journaling meetups to help people develop their nature journaling skills and meet other nature journalers in the area. In September\, we will be focusing on insects! Eleanor will give a brief introduction to some common types of bugs and some tips about how to journal about them\, and then we’ll spend most of the program out on the trail drawing and writing about our discoveries. Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. Adults will be responsible for monitoring their children\, but we would love to have all ages of nature lovers attend. \nBring: Please bring a journal and art supplies. Just a piece of paper and pencil will be enough. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). We require that everyone have a mask with them in case we need to go inside during inclement weather\, to administer first aid\, or for other reasons. Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Training - Fall K-12 Field Trips
DESCRIPTION:More than a thousand K-12 students visit the Clifton Institute on field trips each year. Our goal is to get students outside\, engaging with plants and animals\, and learning that anyone can participate in research–including kids! \nOn these trips\, students help collect data for one of our on-going research projects. They spend anywhere between 2 and 5 hours exploring Clifton’s 900 acres\, learning to identify local species\, practicing field techniques\, analyzing data\, and discussing their results. For some students\, this is their first experience in a semi-wild space. Having enthusiastic\, engaged adults at their side makes a huge difference in the quality of their trip. Clifton’s education team is very small and we need help to give these students the best experience possible! \nIf you are interested in working with kids outdoors or simply curious about our education programs\, please register for this Education Volunteer Training (and check out our Field Trips page)! By attending the training\, you are not automatically beholden to volunteer. This is simply a way for you to learn more about what the field trips look like\, what a volunteer’s role would be\, and hone your own identification and field work skills. At the end of the training\, there will be further instructions for how to sign up to volunteer. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults \nAvailability Requirements: Volunteers must be able to volunteer on Thursdays or Fridays\, as those are our big field trip days. Our busy seasons are from September – November and March – May. We ask that volunteers help with a minimum of 3 trips per season. In the fall\, the research topics are insects\, grassland restoration\, and waterfowl behavior. The spring field trips are vernal pools\, tree phenology\, and insects. \nThere will be an additional training for the spring season trips in February. We appreciate your interest in helping us get Fauquier County kids outside and engaged with science! If you have questions about this training or our education programs\, email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org) \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Winter Sparrow Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:** This event will be held over Zoom ** \nGet ready for winter by brushing up on sparrow identification! Every season brings its own challenges for birdwatching. In winter\, similar-looking sparrows can be hard to tell apart and birding by ear becomes more difficult as birds sing less and call more. Join Executive Director and expert birder Bert Harris to learn some tips for identifying winter sparrows. Bert will walk you through the field marks of each species and use his years of birding experience to help you learn how to identify sparrows. Then in the second section of the program Bert will show sparrow photos to help you practice and test your new skills. This program is intended for beginning and intermediate birders. We will send a Zoom link closer to the date. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else.

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Grass Identification Workshop and Survey
DESCRIPTION:Since 2019 we have been working to restore a 100-acre field that was dominated by Tall Fescue into a diverse native grassland. In cooperation with Virginia Working Landscapes and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation\, we are conducting an experiment to test which of eight methods are best for establishing and maintaining native plants. In this workshop we will give a brief introduction to the restoration experiment and teach you how to identify common grass species. Then we’ll walk about half a mile out into our grassland where we’ll practice our grass identification skills while learning about the methods our scientists use to study the results of the different treatments. We’re looking forward to a beautiful day in the field with you! \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:The 24th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 24th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December!  Our goal?  Count as many birds as we can in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats–grasslands\, forests\, lakes\, backyards\, and even parking lots.  There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow\, and counters get to explore parts of Fauquier county that they might not normally see.  Most importantly\, we will be contributing to an international community science project reaching back over 120 years which informs bird conservation in North America. \nThis event is for birders of any experience level.  Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia and get to know other birdwatchers in the area.  In order to cover the entire circle we split into 9 teams.  Each team is led by an experienced birder.  If you are interested in leading a team\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org).  Depending on the team\, you may spend the day walking\, driving\, or both in order to cover your area.  At the end of the day\, teams are invited back to the peach farmhouse at Clifton for hot chili\, cornbread\, and drinks for our tally rally!  This is where we have a chance to all get together\, count up the birds from the day\, and swap stories. \n*Please note: Depending on which team you are assigned\, you may NOT be meeting at the Clifton Institute in the morning.  Team leaders will tell you when and where to meet at the start of the day\, which is typically around sunrise.   \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.\n \nBring: Please bring binoculars if available.\n \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy.
