SUMMARY:Geology of the Piedmont Tour
DESCRIPTION:It’s winter and that means that rock season is upon us! This year we thought it would be nice to branch out and check out a whole new geologic province. The last two years we took a close look at rocks of the Piedmont Plateau and learned that several times in the geologic past\, huge mountain ranges rose up where the Piedmont is today. Where did those mountains go? The sand and silt washed down from those soaring peaks must have gone somewhere and we are going to find it! Join us for a journey off the western edge of the Blue Ridge Anticlinorium and into one of the world’s great thrust/fold belts\, the Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian Mountains. We will be looking at layers and layers of ancient sediments laid out in a vast river delta. Like the pages of a book\, these layers have a fascinating story to tell about life in the Paleozoic. \nWe will be heading out to Front Royal to begin the geology tour this year and making our way up into Fort Valley\, stopping along the way. A few of the stops will involve a short hike but nothing too strenuous. \nParticipants can EITHER meet at Clifton at 9 a.m. and carpool to Front Royal\, OR meet us in Front Royal around 10 a.m. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children ages 12 and up\, accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. We will listen to the songs of each of the migratory warblers that pass through our region in spring\, while looking at spectrograms to help visual learners identify differences in similar songs. We will also briefly discuss habitats where breeding warblers can be found in our area and cover a handful of other migrants such as vireos and thrushes. This workshop will be of interest to birdwatchers of all skill levels. It will definitely be more fun than listening to a warbler song CD in your car! This event will take place over Zoom. SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Kestrel Tracking
DESCRIPTION:In this installment of our Science Saturdays series participants will have the opportunity to shadow our kestrel research team. We have been attaching GPS transmitters to kestrels since 2021. This summer we will be attaching fewer transmitters in the past\, but we will still be keeping an eye on a few birds from previous summers and monitoring their nest boxes. We can’t guarantee a kestrel sighting\, but it is likely that we’ll get to see one of our local birds. Depending on how the breeding season is going\, from Clifton we may drive to one or two nearby properties that have kestrel boxes. We will encourage but not require everyone to carpool in as few cars as possible. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. SUMMARY:Locust Run Woodland Walk
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with the Piedmont chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society for a special walk! This site hosts a nice variety of habitats from rich riparian forest dominated by Tulip Poplar\, Ironwood\, and Witch Hazel along Locust Run\, to open hilly forests. The property was clear-cut approximately 12 years ago\, and that disturbance has allowed the persistence of two patches of the globally rare and imperilled Torrey’s Mountain-mint. Other exciting open woodland species at the site include Featherbells (new for Fauquier County)\, Bashful Bullrush\, Clasping Milkweed\, Whorled Rosinweed\, Forked Bluecurls\, Rose-pink\, Allegheny Chinkapin\, and Bigtooth Aspen. The bedrock is metasandstone which leads to a very acidic soil in most areas\, but there are richer areas (Little Heartleaf) and clearly some basic areas as well (Maidenhair Spleenwort and Wood Anemone; new for Fauquier County). \nRegistration is through VNPS: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/locust-run-woodland-walk-tickets-902470622927
