Managing Director and passionate nature journaler Eleanor Harris runs quarterly nature journaling meetups to help people develop their nature journaling skills and meet other nature journalers in the area. Eleanor will give a brief introduction to the biology and identification of common native grasses and some tips about journaling grasses. The full-sun greenstone outcrops and mature hardwoods at this site host a diverse and beautiful community of lichens and mosses\, as well as rare vascular plants that specialize on rock outcrops. \nBeginners with no lichen experience are welcome! On this program we’ll take advantage of the long winter nights to look for meteors\, as well as learn a few constellations and look at the stars through our telescope. SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Grass Identification Workshop and Survey
DESCRIPTION:Since 2019 we have been working to restore a 100-acre field that was dominated by Tall Fescue into a diverse native grassland. In cooperation with Virginia Working Landscapes and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation\, we are conducting an experiment to test which of eight methods are best for establishing and maintaining native plants. In this workshop we will give a brief introduction to the restoration experiment and teach you how to identify common grass species. Then we’ll walk about half a mile out into our grassland where we’ll practice our grass identification skills while learning about the methods our scientists use to study the results of the different treatments. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 24th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December!  Our goal?  Count as many birds as we can in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats–grasslands\, forests\, lakes\, backyards\, and even parking lots.  There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow\, and counters get to explore parts of Fauquier county that they might not normally see.  Most importantly\, we will be contributing to an international community science project reaching back over 120 years which informs bird conservation in North America. \nThis event is for birders of any experience level.  Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia and get to know other birdwatchers in the area.  In order to cover the entire circle we split into 9 teams.  Each team is led by an experienced birder.  If you are interested in leading a team\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org).  Depending on the team\, you may spend the day walking\, driving\, or both in order to cover your area.  At the end of the day\, teams are invited back to the peach farmhouse at Clifton for hot chili\, cornbread\, and drinks for our tally rally!  This is where we have a chance to all get together\, count up the birds from the day\, and swap stories. \n*Please note: Depending on which team you are assigned\, you may NOT be meeting at the Clifton Institute in the morning.  Team leaders will tell you when and where to meet at the start of the day\, which is typically around sunrise.   \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome. SUMMARY:Spotted Salamander Walk
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, salamanders leave their homes in the woods and head toward vernal pools\, temporary ponds created by spring rains and melting winter snow. The conditions must be just right\, a warm night with rainy conditions. The males arrive first and lay sperm sacks around the pond. The females come later and absorb these sacks\, which causes them to lay their eggs\, about 50-100 per female. Join us on a walk to our vernal pools to witness this spectacle of nature. \nWe’ll be watching the weather closely to adjust our time and date that looks most promising for us to see this wonderful migration. For now\, this date is a best-guess placeholder for us. We will email you closer to the date with information about when to meet.\n \nPlease bring a flashlight. As we will likely go out in the rain\, we recommend wearing a raincoat and waterproof shoes. \n\n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge:  Adults and children ages 12 and up\, accompanied by an adult. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). SUMMARY:Mid Atlantic Lichen Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to take a casual interest in lichens to the next level? This special all-day workshop is intended for keen beginners who would like to advance their identification abilities. \nWe’ll start with a short presentation on lichen basics\, with a focus on the terminology that is used in dichotomous keys. After the presentation we’ll go and collect some lichens and have lunch (included). After lunch\, we’ll look at the specimens under dissecting microscopes and try some chemical tests. Bert will also demonstrate how to look at lichen spores. We will key things out as a group and individually. \nThanks to our partnership with our friends at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation\, we will have a dissecting microscope for each participant! We will also provide dichotomous keys\, chemicals\, and hand lenses. \nAge: Adults \nCost: $75\, which goes toward supporting programs at both Clifton and OSGF. \nMaximum enrollment: 8 people \nAbout the program leader: Bert Harris is the Executive Director of the Clifton Institute. He is an amateur lichenologist who has the goal of producing a reference to make Mid Atlantic lichen identification easier for beginners.

SUMMARY:Woodcock Watch
DESCRIPTION:The American Woodcock is one of our stealthiest birds\, but it’s also one of the most fun to watch when they do show themselves. On early spring evenings\, the males perform their mating displays\, flying high into the air and falling back to the ground\, making calls and sounds with their wings as they do so. During this program we will give a brief introduction to these interesting birds and then we’ll go out into our fields where we will be able to watch and hear the birds perform. We’ll be watching the weather to pick a date that looks most promising for us to see a good show (if the weather is too cloudy\, windy\, or cold they stay hunkered down). \nIf March 1 looks good we will hold the event then. Otherwise we expect to pick one of March 2\, 8\, or 9 at the same time. We will email you a few days beforehand when we know more. 
 Please bring a flashlight. We will be standing out in the field for around 30 minutes. We will have sit pads to lend out. Some people like to bring a small camping stool\, chair\, or blanket\, but keep in mind that we will have to walk about a quarter mile and we may relocate depending on where the birds are. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children ages 12 and up\, accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a flashlight. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather.
