SUMMARY:Beginner Grass Identification
DESCRIPTION:At first glance\, it might seem like grasses all look the same and that they don’t offer the same beauty that showy flowers do. But we think it’s worth taking the time to learn to tell grasses apart and to appreciate their unique beauty. And winter is a great time to do it because the grasses have gone to seed and are easy to see in an otherwise quiescent landscape. In this workshop for beginners\, Executive Director Bert Harris will take participants on a walk through some of our fields and teach participants how to identify common grasses. \nAge: Adults and children ages 12 and up\, accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside port-o-potty will be available). We require that everyone have a mask with them in case we need to go inside during inclement weather\, to administer first aid\, or for other reasons. Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. \n\n\nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. IF PAID EVENT– No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation. \n\n\nBefore attending this event\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here). \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n\n

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Christmas Bird Count! We’ll spend the day surveying the birds in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats. We usually see a nice diversity of waterfowl and grassland birds. There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow! Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia\, contribute to a long-term community science project\, and get to know other birdwatchers in the area. \nAfter you register\, our staff will assign you to a team of volunteers led by an expert counter. (If you feel qualified to lead a team\, please let us know!) Beginners will be assigned to a team responsible for counting the Clifton Institute’s property; this will give you a chance to go slow and learn how to identify our winter birds. If you are an experienced birdwatcher we will likely assign you to a team that will drive from site to site in our circle. Each team will decided whether to carpool or caravan from site to site. \nUnless conditions change dramatically\, we plan to have a compilation dinner here at the Clifton Institute at the end of the day. Since we will be inside\, we ask that you be vaccinated and bring your vaccine card. If you are not vaccinated or are uncomfortable being inside\, you can leave your data with us\, grab a treat\, and go. Chili will be warm starting at 5:00PM. \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \n\nBring: Please bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside port-o-potty will be available). \n\n\nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can make sure every group gets the volunteers they need. \n\n\nBefore attending this event\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here).

SUMMARY:Research Talk: American Kestrel Nesting Habitat
DESCRIPTION:The American Kestrel\, North America’s smallest falcon\, is declining across the Northeast. While there are many possible causes\, habitat degradation is likely an important factor. Unfortunately\, little is know about how manage land in a way that will best support this species. In 2021 Clifton Institute staff and interns\, along with Dr. Joe Kolowski (Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation) and Alan Williams tagged 19 female kestrels with GPS transmitters. The goal was to compare the kestrels’ use of four field types (cattle pastures\, hay fields\, row crops\, and natural grasslands) as hunting grounds. In this talk Executive Director Dr. Bert Harris will share preliminary findings from this study\, which indicate that cattle pastures outperformed all other field types as kestrel habitat. \nZoom Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89135739843 \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: All ages. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will take place over Zoom. \n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED. \n\n

SUMMARY:Spotted Salamander Walk
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, salamanders leave their homes in the woods and head toward vernal pools\, temporary ponds created by spring rains and melting winter snow. The conditions must be just right\, a warm night with rainy conditions. The males arrive first and lay sperm sacks around the pond. The females come later and absorb these sacks\, which causes them to lay their eggs\, about 50-100 per female. Join us on a walk to our vernal pools to witness this spectacle of nature. \nWe’ll be watching the weather closely to adjust our time and date that looks most promising for us to see this wonderful migration. For now\, this date is a best-guess placeholder for us. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge:  Adults and children ages 12 and up\, accompanied by an adult. \n\nWeather policy:  Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event.\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). \n\n\nBefore attending this event\, please read the information included on our liability release form (click here). \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Patterns in Nature Classes and Crafts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this exciting series of programs all about patterns in nature! Mathematical patterns are all around us\, in plants\, animals\, and even fungi! Knowing where to find them and why they’re there can make being outside in nature even more fun. On each of three consecutive Thursdays\, co-director Eleanor Harris\, Ph.D.\, will give a brief talk on one pattern in nature and then we’ll gather around the dining room table and make a craft that displays that evening’s pattern. No mathematical knowledge or crafting experience required\, just a little curiosity and creativity! All materials will be provided. We’ll have drinks and snacks as we craft. We will meet on February 17\, February 24\, and March 3 6-7PM. \n\nCost: $30 ($25 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \n\n\nAge: Adults only. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will take place inside. We are requiring all participants to be fully vaccinated and to wear masks. We will ask to see vaccination cards. SUMMARY:Warbler Song Bootcamp Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:Brush up on your warbler songs just before the migrants arrive in droves. We will listen to the songs of each of the migratory warblers that pass through our region in spring\, while looking at spectrograms to help visual learners identify differences in similar songs. We will also briefly discuss habitats where breeding warblers can be found in our area and cover a handful of other migrants such as vireos and thrushes. This workshop will be of interest to birdwatchers of all skill levels. It will definitely be more fun than listening to a warbler song CD in your car! \nThis event will take place over Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to participants shortly before the event. \nRegistration is REQUIRED. If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nCost: Free!

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Every year the community science platform iNaturalist organizes the City Nature Challenge\, a friendly competition between cities all over the world to see who can find the most species\, make the most observations\, and involve the most people in community science. This year the Challenge will take place from April 29 to May 2\, but we’ll be focusing our efforts on April 30 and contributing our observations to the Washington\, DC Metro Area team. \nOn April 30 from 10AM to 4PM\, we will have tables where you can learn how to use iNaturalist\, get a map to your very own little patch of the property to survey and photograph\, see examples of a few common species\, and play a game to practice using a dichotomous key. The only thing you need in order to participate is a camera or phone and a willingness to slow down and look closely. (It would help to download the iNaturalist app before you arrive.) Don’t worry about identifying all of the plants\, animals\, and fungi you photograph!  iNaturalist will help you make a good guess and nerds from around the world (or here at Clifton) will identify them the following week. \nHere at the Clifton Institute we use iNaturalist every day to keep track of what we find on our property.  The current count is a whopping 2\,127 species! This is a great way for families and adults alike to help us grow that number\, spend some time outside during a beautiful time of year\, and learn about Virginia’s plants and animals. \n\nCost: Free! \n\n\nAge: All ages. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.) \n\n\nBring: Please bring your smartphone or a camera. \n\n\nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check our Facebook page on the morning of the event in case of inclement weather. \n\n\nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \n\n\nBy attending this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute! \n\n

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Meetup and Walk POSTPONED FROM MAY 7
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this event is the one that was postponed from May 7. No need to re-register if you were already registered. But if you weren’t you can sign up now! \nFrom Co-Director Eleanor Harris: Nature journaling is my favorite hobby\, a great way to spend time outside\, and a powerful tool for learning about nature. I want to help develop the community of nature journalers in our area and to encourage more people to start their own nature journals. Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! I’ll give a very brief introduction to nature journaling before we go for a walk on our beautiful 900-acre property. On the walk we’ll stop and journal about whatever we find. May is a wonderful to see flowers\, insects\, amphibians\, and more and I hope this will become a quarterly program so you can come back and see what every season has to offer. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. Adults will be responsible for monitoring their children\, but we would love to have all ages of nature lovers attend. \nBring: Please bring a journal and art supplies. Just a piece of paper and pencil will be enough. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. We will be selling seedlings grown from these seeds as well as commercially propagated seeds of native species to include a variety of perennial wildflowers for wet-dry areas and full sun-shade; native grasses; and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. You can find a list of the species that will be for sale here.  We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. We hope to see you there!
