SUMMARY:Lichens for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:In this program Co-Director and amateur lichenologist Bert Harris will teach participants the basics of lichen biology and identification. He’ll then lead participants on a lichen tour of the rocky outcrops and mature forests of the Clifton Institute. We have some exciting lichens here\, but we are just starting to study our lichen community\, so with a group of lichen-likers looking closely we may even find a new species! \nWe recommend bringing a hand lens if you have one\, but we will have some to share if not.\n \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. Thank you for your support! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on day before the event. \nCOVID-19 Information: This program will be partially indoors\, partially outdoors (an outside porta potty will be available). Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last week any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.) \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds given for participant cancellation. Refunds will be issued in the event of Clifton cancelling. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Nature journaling is a powerful tool for learning about plants and animals\, a mindful practice for connecting to nature\, and just a great way to spend time outside. You can always nature journal by yourself\, but it can be really fun to go out with other people to get inspired together and see other ways of capturing the same phenomenon on paper. Join us for our first ever nature journaling field trip! In April Co-Director and passionate nature journaler Eleanor Harris will be nature journaling at Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve. We’ll meet at the trailhead\, journal for a couple of hours\, and then com back together to share what we discovered. Eleanor will stick around for a picnic lunch after journaling. More details about where to park and how to meetup will be emailed to registrants closer to the date. Please note that this event is not at the Clifton Institute! Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a journal and art supplies. Just a piece of paper and pencil will be enough. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy.

SUMMARY:Why Are American Kestrels Declining?
DESCRIPTION:American Kestrels are North America’s smallest falcon and one of our most charismatic birds of prey. Unfortunately\, they are experiencing precipitous declines across the country. Despite their popularity and wide geographic range\, relatively little is known about how to manage land to support breeding kestrels. In 2021 we started a long-term research project to track American Kestrels in northern Virginia. We have learned a lot in the last four years and we now have clear recommendations for landowners who want to help to reverse the decline. Join us at Chancellor’s Rock Farm for an in-person update on our latest research results and land management recommendations. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on day before the event. \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \n

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Box Turtle Tracking
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a collaborative research project with the Turtle Conservation Ecology Lab and Joe Kolowski at the Smithsonian’s NZCBI to study Box Turtles. We are studying Box Turtle movements and habitat selection so that we can learn when it’s safe to mow fields in our area. In the third installment of this event\, we will give a short presentation on what we have learned so far and then we’ll go into the field. Participants will help us search for new turtles to study and track turtles that are tagged with radio transmitters. This is a special opportunity to tag along with our staff researchers and see how field science is done. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. SUMMARY:Bobolink Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to an active Bobolink nesting colony in partnership with our friends at Virginia Working Landscapes! Bobolinks are unique and beautiful birds that select hay fields for nesting. Sadly\, they are declining as a result of nest losses from cutting the hay early in the summer. We should enjoy views of adults and fledglings and hear their wonderful song that is reminiscent of R2-D2. The private property we will visit still hosts these wonderful birds because the owners delay haying until the Bobolinks have finished nesting. We should also see a variety of other breeding birds such as Purple Martins\, Grasshopper Sparrows\, Eastern Meadowlarks\, and Blue Grosbeaks. Cover photo by Kathlin Simpkins. \nLocation: The event will take place on a private property near Upperville in northern Fauquier County. Directions will be provided to registered participants. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. Thank you for your support! \nAges: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWhat to bring: We recommend wearing long pants and boots to protect yourself from ticks and a broad-brimmed hat. We also recommend bringing binoculars and a camera. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for an update on the afternoon before. \nCOVID-19 information: This event will be entirely outdoors. Please do not attend if you are experiencing or have experienced in the last two weeks any symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever\, cough\, shortness of breath\, etc.). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy.

SUMMARY:Clifton Dragonfly Count 2025
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are still welcome to join us! Please email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org to learn more.\nJoin us for our fifth annual Dragonfly Count! Our goals are to learn which species of dragonflies and damselflies are found in our area\, to monitor changes in their populations\, and to encourage everyone to learn more about Odonates. \nThe map of the count circle is here. The circle includes a wide variety of aquatic habitats\, including a sphagnum bog\, fish-free marshes\, lakes with abundant lily pads\, and a variety of clean streams and rivers that range from tiny seeps all the way up to the Rappahannock River. This interesting area has not received as much study as nearby northern Virginia\, but 72 species of dragonflies and damselflies have already been documented inside the circle. \nWe will divide the circle up into several areas\, which teams of people will cover\, similar to a Christmas Bird Count or NABA butterfly count. We will let you know where to meet closer to the date. The count is open to people of all experience levels. We welcome dragonfly experts as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these fascinating insects. \nThis event is free but registration is required. \nEmail Bert Harris (bharris@cliftoninstitute.org) with any questions or if you would like to lead one of the teams. Please let us know if you live inside the count circle and you have a fish-free pond or marsh or a pond with lily pads or other emergent aquatic vegetation on your property that you would like to be included in the count. \nWe are partnering with the Fauquier County Parks and Recreation Department\, Goose Creek Association\, Virginia Outdoors Foundation\, and White House Farm Foundation on this event. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: It will be hot and we’ll be spending time near or in the water. Shorts and sturdy sandals or rubber boots are usually best\, but long pants can come in handy as well. Please bring sunscreen\, sun hat\, binoculars (important)\, camera\, insect net\, and plenty of water. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Summer Eastern Box Turtle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with our friends at the Turtle Conservation Ecology Lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute\, we’re hosting a summer Eastern Box Turtle workshop! This workshop will focus on life history\, threats\, and movements from the perspective of nesting season and summer activity. We’ve been seeing Box turtles nesting lately\, and our telemetry data is showing that a lot of turtles (over 40%) are in fields right now instead of forests! \nWe’ll begin with an indoors portion\, then head into the field to experience the turtles in person. Light refreshments will be provided. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute.

SUMMARY:2025 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are welcome to join us! Email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org to sign up.\nEvery year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 30th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 23rd year contributing our data to NABA. \nButterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date.
