DESCRIPTION:Ponds might seem ordinary\, but they’re specialized habitats full of fascinating species and they require specific care to keep them looking and functioning at their best. Come learn all about pond life with Cheyenne Hawkins\, Clifton Institute Educator\, and Ben Rhoades\, Watershed Manager with the Reston Association and Certified Lake Manager with the North American Lake Management Society. \nThe program will begin with a walk around Clifton’s Upper Pond where Cheyenne will share the history of Clifton’s ponds and teach about the aquatic wildlife. We will then settle along the shoreline of Upper Pond where Ben will share more about pond health\, care\, and management. Come learn about who lives in these freshwaters\, the signs of an unhealthy pond\, and how you can care for them! DESCRIPTION:Piedmont grasslands are the most diverse plant communities in the state of Virginia. They are also home to declining birds and insects and a number of rare plants. Grasslands in our region require frequent fires\, mowing\, or grazing to prevent them from turning into forests. Therefore there is an active debate about how grasslands were maintained historically\, how extensive they were\, and how long they have been present in northern Virginia. Join us to learn all about these special habitats\, their history\, and what we’re doing to protect them. This will be an outdoor event that will take place at one of Virginia’s most diverse grasslands! \nWe will meet at Clifton and carpool to two nearby sites. DESCRIPTION:Hey grownups! Have you ever wished you could go to summer camp? Well\, now you can! This September we are offering our sixth annual weekend-long Nature Camp for Grownups! \nActivities will start on the morning of September 26 and conclude on the afternoon of September 27. Activities will include short workshops (for example on insect orders or plant families)\, nature walks\, nature journaling\, crafts\, and more. And of course we’ll be making friends and having fun the whole time! \nWe will have the option to tent camp overnight near the farmhouse. Campers will have access to a bathroom in the farmhouse but not a shower. If you prefer to go home on Saturday night you can meet back up with us for or after breakfast on Sunday morning. We will provide simple lunches\, dinner\, and breakfast. All materials for crafts and other projects will be included. \nTimes: 10:00AM on September 26 to 3:30PM on September 27 \nCost: $150 ($125 for Friends of the Clifton Institute). \nAge: Adults only. \nBring: Snacks\, water bottle\, a nature journal if you have one. If you will be camping\, please bring a tent\, sleeping bag\, sleeping pad\, and any other equipment you need to be comfortable. SUMMARY:Natural Elements in Floral Design
DESCRIPTION:This three hour workshop combines basic floral design using the abundant wild flowers\, grasses\, berries and foliage found at the Clifton field station. The morning will begin with a brief introduction and demonstration followed by a short guided walk on the Clifton trails where participants will collect elements to be used in their designs. \nFollowing the walk Doug Larson\, experienced floral designer and President of the Clifton Board\, will guide individuals in the creation of an arrangement using mostly native flora. You can expect to learn basic design techniques\, native plant identification and expand your thinking about bringing nature home. \nDoug Larson began work at a florist at age 16. Over the years he gained knowledge that proved to be useful in later life when he enjoyed creating floral designs for his family and friends. Doug is an honorary member of the Warrenton Garden Club and has given lectures at various venues in the community. The Piedmont Environmental Council has planted The Larson Native Plant Garden at it’s headquarters in recognition of his Doug’s work to promote native plants in the Piedmont. \nThe $25 fee includes materials and snacks. \nCost: \nAdults – $25 All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our inaugural day-long nature journaling retreat on our beautiful 900-acre nature preserve! Whether you have been nature journaling for years or have never nature journaled before but want to try it out\, this event is for you! \nNature journaling is a powerful tool for learning about plants and animals\, a mindful practice for connecting to nature\, and just a great way to spend time outside. In this retreat\, you’ll explore different nature journaling strategies and subjects under the guidance of four experienced educators from around Virginia. You can learn more about them below.  \nWe’ll start the day with a class on the foundations of nature journaling before dividing into three groups to rotate through three workshops on different subjects\, activities\, and strategies to include in your nature journal.  \nThis program is intended for an adult audience. Interested children ages 12 and up may participate but must be supervised by an adult.  \nThe fee covers four workshops and supplies to use throughout the day and beyond. One of the three classroom spaces is inside; otherwise we will spend most of the day outside. Please dress accordingly. There are port-a-potties and potable water on site.  \nParticipants should bring lunch\, snacks\, and a water bottle. We recommend bringing a portable camp chair\, stool\, or sit pad. If you have a journal you’re already working in you can bring that to add to over the course of the day; otherwise we will provide a small journal for you to use. You are encouraged to bring a completed or in-progress nature journal for a journal share at the end of the day.  \nCost: $170 \nAge: Adults and children ages 12 and up accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: We will hold this event in light rain. SUMMARY:Intermediate Lichen Identification
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to take a casual interest in lichens to the next level? This special all-day workshop is intended for keen beginners and intermediates who would like to advance their identification abilities. \nWe’ll start with a presentation on lichen identification\, with a focus on the terminology that is used in dichotomous keys. After the presentation we’ll go and collect lichens in the mature forests and metabasalt rock outcrops on the institute’s 900 acres. After lunch (included)\, we’ll look at the specimens under dissecting and compound microscopes. We’ll do chemical tests and examine spores. We will also key things out as a group and individually. \nWe will provide microscopes\, dichotomous keys\, and chemicals. \nAge: Adults only. \nCost: $125\, which goes toward supporting programs at Clifton. \nAbout the program leader: Bert Harris is a Co-Director of the Clifton Institute. SUMMARY:27th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:*If you register\, Bridget will email you with a team assignment no later than Monday\, 14th December! The leader of that team will tell you the start time (usually around 7AM) and it will be up to you how long you would like to count for.* \nJoin us for the 27th Annual The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count this December!  Our goal?  Count as many birds as we can in our 15-mile-diameter count circle\, which includes a variety of habitats–grasslands\, forests\, lakes\, backyards\, and even parking lots.  There’s always a chance for Short-eared Owl and American Tree Sparrow\, and counters get to explore parts of Fauquier county that they might not normally see.  Most importantly\, we will be contributing to an international community science project reaching back over 120 years which informs bird conservation in North America. \nThis event is for birders of any experience level.  Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a great way to learn about the winter birds of Virginia and get to know other birdwatchers in the area.  In order to cover the entire circle we split into 9 teams.  Each team is led by an experienced birder.  If you are interested in leading a team\, please email Bridget Bradshaw (bbradshaw@cliftoninstitute.org).  Depending on the team\, you may spend the day walking\, driving\, or both in order to cover your area.  At the end of the day\, teams are invited back to the peach farmhouse at Clifton for hot chili\, cornbread\, and drinks for our tally rally!  This is where we have a chance to all get together\, count up the birds from the day\, and swap stories. \n*Please note: Depending on which team you are assigned\, you may NOT be meeting at the Clifton Institute in the morning.  Team leaders will tell you when and where to meet at the start of the day\, which is typically around sunrise.   \nCost: Free! \nAge: All ages welcome.
