SUMMARY:Butterfly Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are still welcome to join us. Email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org if you’re interested.\nJoin us to learn about butterfly identification and biology. Co-Director Bert Harris will give a presentation on the identification of common butterflies in our area. We will then take a walk around the field station to look for butterflies (and perhaps some dragonflies as well.) All skill levels welcome! \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.)  All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. SUMMARY:Summer Eastern Box Turtle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with our friends at the Turtle Conservation Ecology Lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute\, we’re hosting a summer Eastern Box Turtle workshop! This workshop will focus on life history\, threats\, and movements from the perspective of nesting season and summer activity. We’ve been seeing Box turtles nesting lately\, and our telemetry data is showing that a lot of turtles (over 40%) are in fields right now instead of forests! \nWe’ll begin with an indoors portion\, then head into the field to experience the turtles in person. SUMMARY:2025 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed but you are welcome to join us! Email bharris@cliftoninstitute.org to sign up.\nEvery year community scientists help count the butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association. This summer we will host our 30th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 23rd year contributing our data to NABA. \nButterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  We will meet at the Clifton Institute at 4 PM to tally our results over cold drinks (provided). \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water.
